About Stephen Honey

An effective and independent legal system is one of the pillars of a free and just society and I have spent my whole career to date developing solutions that enable lawyers to work more effectively and provide a better service to their clients.Since starting off in traditional print publishing, I have broadened my experience to encompass a diverse range of formats and activities including online learning, video production, IP licensing, retail management and awards events and enjoy the mental stimulus of taking on a new challenge. I believe I bring to all of these activities the imagination to envision how products and services can be improved, a keen sense of commercial realities and the people management skills to enable teams to perform productively.I also enjoy writing and have had a number of articles published in both New Law Journal and Counsel on topics including the role of webinars in continuing legal education, how law firms can make use of video as a marketing tool and also promoting our awards events.Outside of work I have a love of triathlon and have completed a number of events in recent years including Ironman 70.3 Weymouth and Stafford as well as the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon. I also serve as membership secretary on the committee of my local club Tri-Force and, since training as a guide runner, have been helping visually-impaired athletes achieve their goals.

Stephen Honey Work Experience Details
  • Lexisnexis Uk
Head Of Content Acquisition And Licensing
Lexisnexis Uk Sep 2022 - Present
    London, Gb
In my current role I manage a high-performing team of commissioning editors to deliver a comprehensive portfolio of market-leading legal content in both print and online which features key works including Halsbury’s Laws of England, The Family Court Practice (The Red book), Atkin’s Court Forms and Gore-Browne on Companies.I also manage an extensive range of licences with third-party content providers and am responsible for developing supplier relationships and leading on renewal negotiations and terminations.Outside of the office I have participated in, and helped to organise, LexisNexis Cycle Challenges to Amsterdam, Hamburg, Luxembourg, Paris and – most recently – Mainz, raising significant sums for a variety of charities.
  • Lexisnexis Uk
    Head Of Learning
    Lexisnexis Uk Nov 2014 - Sep 2022
    London, Gb
In this role I managed a team producing over 150 high-quality training webinars per year, presented by experts in their field, which we filmed in our state-of-the-art multimedia studio on Farringdon Street. We constantly sought to improve the offering to ensure it remained relevant through developing new topic streams (such as Brexit, personal skills or COVID-19) or launching a new website, as we did in 2016.I also hired the studio facilities out to produce video content for a range of clients that included leading law and accountancy practices, professional bodies, listed companies and charities. In 2017, my role grew to encompass management of two high profile awards events – the Family Law Awards and LexisNexis Legal Awards – which involves selecting the award categories, recruiting expert judges and working with a range of colleagues across the business to ensure the delivery of events that combine commercial success with a reputational boost for the business. In 2017, I revisited my former life when LexisNexis acquired Jordan Publishing and I took on commercial responsibility for a portfolio of market leading journal titles that include the monthly, Family Law.
  • The Law Society
    Publishing And E-Learning Manager
The Law Society Jan 2002 - Oct 2014
    London, Gb
This role offered me the opportunity to take commercial responsibility for a publishing business and gave me valuable experience of people management.Initially I managed the Society’s professional publishing arm, which included a range of print titles and licensing a profitable portfolio of IP rights.Together with my team, we actively expanded the list and leveraged the commercial potential of the Law Society brand to grow until we became one of the recognised players in legal publishing. I also drove down costs through initiatives such as switching our distribution services to a new supplier. Later I took on responsibility for additional commercial activities, closing the book and gift shop at Chancery Lane and moving this retail activity online. From 2010 I launched the Society’s e-learning business, developing a profitable portfolio of online courses and webinars that were made available through an online portal, the CPD Centre. This experience awakened my interest in e-learning and led me to my next career move.
  • Jordan Publishing Ltd
    Commissioning Editor
Jordan Publishing Ltd Aug 1995 - Dec 2001
    Bristol, Gb
It was an exciting time to be working at what was then the leading independent legal publisher, during a period when the list was undergoing significant growth. My role was to develop the business by commissioning a range of new titles in a variety of practice areas and formats for the Jordans and Family Law imprints. This involved coming up with new proposals based on in-depth market research and compelling business cases, identifying and contracting expert authors to write them and forming effective working relationships with them to ensure that they delivered their manuscripts on schedule. I enjoyed the intellectual and commercial challenge that the role provided and learned a lot from some amazing colleagues but, after 6 years, it was time to move away from Bristol and take the next step in my career.
