I recently had an HR-type I respect quite a lot ask me if I knew where I was going when I started, knowing full well few of us do. Her question gave me a nudge to pull back the underbrush from my career path, review a few forks, and try to figure out what controls my compass.The results surprised me, as I had assumed each discrete business decision would have been made in the moment, influenced by my family's immediate needs. However, hindsight gave me perspective to see a continuum in my career choices. This path that I was treading was built by allowing my innate strengths and abilities to lead. For example: I love to solve problems, I am very interested in people and the paths they are following, and I think there is no higher calling than to serve. I have been successful with every company where I was in position to put these fundamentals to work. Also eye opening was that experience shored my weaknesses, making me a more productive, confident, and accepting business partner, and less stressed by the inevitable peaks and troughs of the business cycle. I realized a few years ago that my 30+ years in the business world has created a personal legacy. In other words, I have my own personal brand. We are all familiar with brands in a business context. Companies spend much time and effort in developing their brand to communicate their unique values and stand out in a competitive,crowded and noisy marketplace. I am proposing that each of us create our own brands, to uniquely identify our personal vision and values, to help us stand out from the crowd. You want your brand to reflect the real you, not a facade of what you want your employer or other people to see. Your brand is a relationship that will connect you with like-minded people. And relationships connect everything that is important in life.SH
