The company CEO recruited me for the position of Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary to lead its four member legal department responsible for all legal matters arising in several countries throughout North and South America. With the assistance of a superb team of attorneys and staff, we were able to reform the department’s reputation and MO from one of resistance to one dedicated to getting to “yes.” Under my leadership, the department began to work creatively to craft a commercial strategy and appetite for risk that helped to maximize revenue coming in the front door while minimizing that which leaked out the back door due to claims, litigation, non-collections, etc. In addition, I personally took over responsibility for leading the strategy and defense against an existing and costly multi-state wage and hour Fair Labor Standards Act collective action case which ultimately settled on terms that served the company’s best interests. Other notable accomplishments include:■ Facilitated settlement negotiations that protected against multi-million dollar liability claims■ Led the negotiations and closings on US and Canadian acquisitions and joint ventures/strategic partnerships with a total value of $55M■ Developed and led the defense strategy of a multi-year, multi-state collective action wage and hour case■ Repeatedly restrained outside counsel fee spend by reducing the number of large law firms used and by strategically partnering with value-focused service providers■ Reduced employment practices liability claims by 37% over two years by strengthening adherence to best practices
