Updated 14 June 2024:I am currently building a team of Book Industry Communication volunteers with which to launch BIC’s newest strategic project, focusing on best practice for the collection and management of product metadata. Product information does so much more than make books discoverable. It makes for an efficient global supply chain. It also overlaps with my last assignment which is now nearing its conclusion. BIC’s Books Across Borders Best Practice Project has concentrated on the import and export of physical books post BREXIT. It has presented lots of challenges, not least how to reconcile the needs of international trade with book industry standards and ways of working. I have an extensive knowledge of the book supply chain, standards, processes and best practice. I have applied my expertise to successfully deliver assignments for several organisations, including industry standards bodies, service providers, publishers (including print on demand), wholesalers and distributors. Topics have included metadata, b2b e-commerce, product management, digital audiobooks and the best-in-class Industry Returns Initiative. I have used my network of contacts and applied my sales, marketing and social media skills in support of my work. In my previous role as Managing Director, Discovery & Commerce, Nielsen Book Services, I had ultimate responsibility for the strategic direction, revenue growth and cost management of the metadata and e-commerce businesses. I also managed the UK and Ireland ISBN Agency. The client base comprised retailers, e-tailers, publishers, distributors, wholesalers, libraries and third-party providers in more than 100 countries, all dependent on the company’s suite of professional business tools to run their day-to-day operations. Early in my career I developed a passion for the book supply chain, initially developing, testing and implementing an estate wide EPoS system at Waterstones. I then applied my skills to simplifying and automating Waterstones Finance Operations relationships with its suppliers. I joined Nielsen Book to focus on commercial supply chain opportunities. I understand the book supply chain and my passion for it is a theme that underpins over 35 years’ experience in the book industry. I advocate and promote supply chain standards and best practice. I encourage my peers and colleagues to actively participate in supply chain initiatives and share their expertise for the benefit of the book industry. I always bring a fresh perspective to industry challenges.

Global Managing Director, Discovery And Commerce SolutionsNielsen Book Jan 2017 - Feb 2020Woking, SurreyI was accountable for the profitable revenue growth and proactive cost management of the Nielsen Discovery & Commerce business, delivering accurate and timely metadata and transactional information to clients in more than 100 countries. The clients’ day to day operations were dependent on Nielsen Book’s suite of professional business tools. In this senior role I managed teams in the UK and North America which were diverse in terms of skillset. I was comfortable with cross team collaboration and leading in a matrix organisation. The teams delivered business development, account management, support and professional services to several hundred key clients. Overall, the client portfolio comprised several thousand, including retailers, publishers, distributors, wholesalers, libraries and service providers.Much of my career has involved change, both in my own organisation and at clients. In this role I rationalised the Book product portfolio, streamlined and automated business processes, developed the team structure, improved performance and increased colleague engagement. At clients I drove change through promoting standards and best practice, understanding the metadata and e-commerce issues that they were trying to address and developing bespoke solutions that drove responsiveness and efficiency. I worked closely with standards organisations such as BIC and EDItEUR. I played a key role in BIC work streams, supported industry initiatives and presented on aspects of the book supply chain at London and Frankfurt Book Fairs. -
Global Director, Discovery And Commerce SolutionsNielsen Book Sep 2015 - Dec 2016Woking, SurreyI was responsible for overall performance and strategy for the combined b2b e-commerce and metadata businesses, including the implementation of a new team structure to better tackle commercial challenges and leverage upsell and cross sell opportunities in our product portfolio. The new, simplified team structure also reflected changing client and business needs: a more proactive approach to account management, a speedier response to support requests, offering greater flexibility and opportunities for team members to develop their skills and progress in the organisation. The structure focused on four core areas: new business, account management, professional services and support functions. Having fewer, bigger teams, each led by an authoritative and knowledgeable manager, created greater clarity for our clients and contributed positively to team engagement. -
Head Of Global Practice, Commerce SolutionsNielsen Book Mar 2013 - Aug 2015Woking, SurreyI managed the b2b e-commerce business, including support functions. I successfully integrated the PubEasy and PubNet assets acquired from ProQuest in 2013 with minimal disruption to the expanded portfolio of clients. I also oversaw changes to the third-party portfolio of products to reduce costs, rationalise the product range and enhance client relevance. I reviewed pricing and subscription models and developed the value message for the core Book services. Responsiveness to client need was always a challenge, particularly with older, legacy products and services. Product rationalisation not only allowed me to better focus technology resources but also integrate the Helpdesk function into the commercial team, meaning that sales, account management and support functions all reported to me. -
Head Of BooknetNielsen Book Jan 2007 - Feb 2013Woking, SurreyI managed a specialist team delivering b2b e-commerce services to a range of book distributors, wholesalers, libraries and retailers, principally in the UK and Ireland. Responsibilities included account managing existing clients as well as winning new business in a consolidating market. The business had grown through mergers and acquisitions, so most clients had multiple subscriptions. The product portfolio had several services that were competing against one another, leading to confusion. B2b e-commerce is complicated at the best of times. My principal challenges involved rationalising the product portfolio to focus on client relevance and retention. Team members were juggling new business, account management and technical roles. I encouraged them to focus on supporting and retaining existing clients whilst I recruited a Business Development Manager to create a healthy opportunities pipeline and drive sales growth. I established a clear business strategy for the product portfolio and aligned this with team members’ objectives. Exploring and explaining the business value proposition was a key need. No longer a business that focused on the features and benefits of its products and services, I concentrated on the supply chain insights and expertise that our team could deliver book industry organisations, the role of our products in the supply chain and how, through consultancy services, we could address specific business needs. -
ManagerWaterstones Oct 1988 - Dec 2006London, England, United KingdomMy principal responsibilities included improving data integrity, the promotion and implementation of Waterstones b2b e-commerce strategy, the integration of the newly acquired Ottakars stores into Waterstones finance infrastructure and the development and roll out of an estate wide electronic point of sale system. There was a significant support overhead for maintaining five separate point of sale systems in several hundred retail stores. The older EPoS systems were becoming increasingly unreliable and costly to maintain, store training had to be tailored to the specific system and there was no real time sales or stock information fed back to head office. I led head office and field-based teams that developed, tested, piloted, rolled out and supported a new estate wide EPoS system. Post that roll out, I was challenged to simplify Waterstones Finance Operations supply chain through the use of EDI. The majority of Waterstones 3m annual finance transactions generated by stores and suppliers were paper based, requiring manual keying and archiving. By leveraging recognised EDI standards, 90% of these transactions were automated, costs drastically reduced and staff redeployed to focus on account management.
