Steve sold Virtual Growth to Insperity (NYSE: NSP), becoming division president of Insperity Financial Management Services. The economic downturn, and rising health insurance costs after September 11, 2001, caused the stock to take a hit and the company was unable to launch inside Insperity. Steve bought the company back in 2004 and spun it off as GrowthForce, switching to QuickBooks as the platform for the ecosystem.While President of Insperity Financial Management Services, Steve had the opportunity to study how Insperity scaled a multi-billion dollar high-touch, high-tech service organization. Working directly for CEO Paul Sarvadi, Steve learned how an empowered workforce can create a highly profitable company. He learned how management can infuse passion in employees by building a company where people work to live, not live to work.

When Netscape 1.0 was launched in 1994, Steve saw the potential of the Internet as a wide-area network and founded Virtual Growth Inc. He raised $43 million from blue chip venture capital firms, including Bessemer Ventures and Citigroup Ventures, creating the industry’s first Client Accounting Services firm with a team of 250 employees.Virtual Growth served middle market companies and become the largest middle market provider of outsourced accounting services in the U.S. Capitalizing on its first-mover advantage and its VC funding, the company created Virtual Accountant, the first Web-based accounting system using Lawson Software as a technology platform.

Steve joined Amnesty International USA one week after the conclusion of the Human Rights Now! concert tour, when the organization had ballooned from $6 million to $18 million, thanks to Bruce Springsteen, U2, Sting, Peter Gabriel and other friends of Amnesty. He was responsible for everything not related to organizations programmatic work. His charge was to build the infrastructure for the organization to handle its 300% growth, including finance, fundraising, IT and Human Resources. He quickly learned the difference between public accounting’s financial reporting and a CFO’s need for management accounting with a focus on operating results not just on keeping the auditors and IRS happy. Steve also served on the organization’s five member worldwide Computer Communications Working Group, responsible for designing the global communication system.

Steve began his professional career at Ernst & Young in New York where he grew from college intern to the first manager in the company’s accounting system design consulting group.He spent two years as an auditor where he specialized in international banking and foreign currency. Steve then moved to the EY consulting department where, as a project manager designing, implementing and integrating accounting systems for global Fortune 100 companies, Steve saw how “the big boys” automated their entire accounting systems. As the only CPA in the group, he became the firms expert in developing systems of internal controls.During his tenure at EY, Steve came to realize small businesses had the same needs for an automated back office, however at the technology was not yet affordable. When today’s Cloud technology appeared on the market, Steve was early to grasp how small business could gain the same automated management accounting system functionality as bigger business.
