Dual role (June 2015 - January 2016) with Study Director Team Leader at Bayer Crop ScienceIn Jun 2015, I joined the newly-formed Product Safety Assessments team which is a part of Seed & Trait Safety. In this role as a product safety manager, I am responsible for defining the product safety assessment strategy and coordinating the execution of studies conducted by global operations (United States, Belgium, Brazil, and India) for GM (genetically modified) cotton and canola projects. I represent Seed & Traits Safety in cotton project teams and manage technical/regulatory issues by evaluating mitigation plans for cost, potential impact, and probability of success.In addition to my core responsibilities, I was responsible for leading a core team of 19 team members from the United States, Belgium, Brazil and Germany in the development of the first Seed & Trait Safety Academy, an internal training on the safety assessment of GM crops.

I joined Bayer in 2011 as a Regulatory Scientist II in the Seed & Trait Safety function, the function responsible for conducting safety assessment of GM crops. In this role, I managed protein expression, ELISA validation, independent lab validation (ILV), and protein characterization studies for GM cotton, soybean, and canola projects as a GLP study director/principle investigator. I was also responsible for establishing the outsourcing strategy for ELISA analysis and successfully oversaw the first ELISA study outsourced to a CRO. In February 2014, I was promoted to Senior Scientist and assumed the responsibility of leading the team.In addition to my core responsibilities, I served as vice chair for the ILSI Crop Composition Database working group. In that role, I led the initiative to expand the database to include data for canola, rice, sweet corn, and potato. www.cropcomposition.org.

As a regulatory Scientist I (Technical Expert I), I was responsible for overseeing the molecular characterization studies for GM maize, soybean, and cotton projects as a GLP study director. While working in this department, I established outsourcing capability for the molecular characterization team and defined procedures for working with CROs. I also served as the function representative on core project teams for two GM maize insect-resistance projects and one GM maize herbicide-tolerance project, coordinating technical and safety evaluation of product concepts. One key achievement in this role was the development of 17 report templates to improve report writing efficiency and standardize the language in molecular characterization reports across projects.

I began working for Syngenta in 2005 as a Research Associate in the Plant Analysis Group, Syngenta Biotechnology Inc. division. I was responsible for molecular characterization of early stage projects for event selection. I was promoted to Research Scientist in 2008, and my greatest achievement during my work with the Plant Analysis group was process improvements that increased our efficiency by >400% in the first year of implementation and further increased the flanking sequence recovery rate for primary experiments from 70% to >90%.

My career as a scientist began in a Plant Pathology lab at North Carolina State University (NCSU). My first project was the identification and characterization of viruses infecting sweetpotatoes as a viral complex often referred to as Sweetpotato Virus Disease. Our research led to the first report of Sweetpotato chlorotic stunt virus infecting sweetpotatoes in North Carolina and a comprehensive phylogentic analysis of different sweetpotato potyvirus isolates from around the world. While at NCSU, I also worked with Tomato spotted wilt virus, and Impatiens necrotic spot virus.
