I am a medical academic and biotechnology board director with more than 20 years experience in research and commercialization. In the academic sector, I founded The George Institute for Global Health, a large not-for-profit medical research organization with programs in disease causation, prevention, treatment and service delivery. In the private sector, I founded George Health Enterprises, a for-profit company established to commercialize Institute intellectual property and know-how. I have served in various board, management, and advisory roles in both academic and commercial organizations worldwide. The George Institute is headquartered in Sydney, with major R&D centres in China, India and the UK, and research programs spanning more than 70 countries. George Health Enterprises is a private company owned jointly by The George Institute, BUPA and Federation Asset Management. Until the divestment of George Health’s largest commercial asset, The George group had over 1,000 employees and an annual turnover in excess of $100 million.George Health Enterprises has established and spun out several biomedical companies, the largest of which is George Clinical, a global clinical research organization (CRO) providing research services to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. George Clinical was sold to private equity firm Hillhouse in 2023. The next largest is George Medicines, a UK-based company developing innovative drug treatments for cardiometabolic diseases. The growth of George Medicines was accelerated by private equity investments from Australian investors in 2020. In addition to my appointment at The George Institute, I have held professorial appointments at the University of Oxford, Imperial College London, the University of Sydney, and UNSW Sydney. I served as Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the UK Biobank throughout its design, development, and implementation phase. I have also served as a global advisor to several major pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Servier.For my work, I have been the fortunate recipient of numerous honours and awards. In the 2017 Queen's Honours List, I was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for services to medical research. In 2011, I was elected to the Australian Academy of Science (FAA) and in 2013, I was elected to the British Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci). In 2013, I was also named EY Social Entrepreneur of the Year. For more than a decade, I have been listed among the top 1% of medical researchers for the impact of my work.
