Developing Environmental Forensic Capacity at NILU

I am conducting investigations for clients using both old and new data to establish both the fate of compounds and their potential liabilities. I am advising clients on all aspects of environmental investigations from the design of sampling programmes (to answer specific questions) through to chemometric / multivariate statistical investigations of the data to determine who did what, when and where.I chair the International Network of Environmental Forensics (INEF), a specialist interest group within the umbrella of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).

INEF was formed in 2008 to promote the science behind environmental forensic investigation in a not-for-profit manner. I am part of team that organises meetings and facilitates discussions and partnerships. INEF is part of the RSC and hosts annual meetings.

As a Managing Scientist with Exponent, I identified potential clients, developed projects and conducted environmental investigations. Many of these resulted in Expert Witness reports for the clients and the court. My speciality has been to be able to identify the source(s) of contamination in the environment and to be able to quantitatively separate between sources and the background or baseline condition. Linked to this has been to quantify the degradation pathways and time since release. Many of these methods have used a combination of physical, chemical and biological sciences as they do not operate in isolation in the environment.
