Executive Editor, Asian Legal Business
Sydney
I joined Key Media International (KMI) just after it founded in 2001 to become the launch editor of Asian Legal Business, a new monthly news title for corporate in-house lawyers and those in private practice across the Asia Pacific region. KMI continues to be privately held but has grown into an award-winning global media company with eight offices and more than 230 employees.• Launching and developing ALB exposed me to the business of publishing in a more meaningful way. I learned how to most effectively balance editorial integrity with the need for advertising and subscription revenue• While many other legal titles failed, ALB, under my editorship, generated new lines of revenue and successfully launched a succession of spin-off publications, projects and events (KMI was ranked 38th in the 2005 BRW Fast 100 survey)• I learned about the importance of making content accessible and the challenge of remotely managing teams in multiple locations (Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Sydney)• This was my first opportunity to get involved with event production. I conceived, developed and launched successful annual law awards in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore and Sydney that continue to this day.N.B. In March 2011, KMI successfully sold ALB to Thomson Reuters for an undisclosed fee. Tony Kinnear, senior vice president of the Asia region for the legal businesses of Thomson Reuters, described ALB as “required reading for the region’s leading law firms, in-house counsel and C-suite executives … its editorial is well regarded for its insights and analysis of legal industry news, and it is widely viewed as an important channel for law firms looking to build their presence in the region”.
