I conduct research focused on understanding the interactions between the resources industry and sustainable development that will occur as we transition towards a decarbonised economy. To do this, I apply quantitative sustainability assessment methods to understand challenges and find solutions within the mineral and metals sector, so that big-complex data can be turned into concise-simple data for communication and change management. This work has spanned from producing detailed regional supply scenarios for commodities of importance for electrification and battery technologies, through to development of the foundational datasets used to benchmark the greenhouse gas emissions and water use impacts of metal supply. I am particularly interested in situations where sustainability theory meets practice - and so I have conducted detailed evaluations of corporate disclosures and sustainability reporting, worked to improve recommendations for sustainability indicator design and selection, developed new database and modelling approaches to resolve key sectoral challenges, and provided frank advice on the design and operation of sustainability services and schemes to businesses, clients and government.Currently I am Research Director at UTS's Institute for Sustainable Futures, after initially joining UTS through our Chancellor's Fellowship scheme. Prior to this, I worked in a range of roles with Monash University and CSIRO, where I assessed the global supply and demand of mineral products, evaluated water and energy consumption throughout the mining industry, and conducted techno-economic and life cycle assessment studies of technologies being developed for mining, mineral processing and metal production. I have also been extensively involved in international working groups to improve the theoretical underpinnings of impact characterization models for resource use and scarcity that are used as part of LCA studies.I am always happy to discuss the outcomes of my work and how we can make research more accessible and useful for decision making.
