I grew up in West Texas -- in a town filled with independent business owners. Success was never a given. Determination and hard work kept them going. Reputation and relationships were their lifeline. Their spirit was infectious. At college, I was on my way to a pre-med degree when the business experience of my youth took charge. I changed my course into accounting. Ultimately, I wanted to work with businesses that drove our economy. Some would find this transition extreme. For me, it was a natural and easy decision. My passion is to grow companies and develop leadership teams.Today, as the managing director of The Coffman Group (TCG), I work with entrepreneurial CEOs and business owners of middle market companies to help them scale and grow their business. In the beginning, I joined a major accounting firm. I spent my time consulting with business owners. My financial degree provided a “language” to understand their business, but my real interest was in the how’s and why's of their company. My time with Norman Brinker was instrumental in my career. I learned operational and leadership principles. I watched and learned how he built successful companies by winning through people. It’s the foundation I use to build successful companies. At Wasp Barcode, I took a fledgling business unit and transformed it into a market leader for small business productivity solutions. At First Cash, my focus on operations and management structure helped this publicly traded company grow its market cap over 5x to $1.8B. At WatchGuard, I was hired by the technical founder to build the company. I provided executive leadership, led the management team and implemented a growth strategy. The company’s growth and profitability accelerated culminating in a successful acquisition by Motorola in 2019. A key to success is my approach managing leadership teams. We define and agree what a win looks like. We establish a framework or “playing field” to operate. Then, I let them go and empower action. My main task afterwards is to eliminate obstacles and correct course as needed.Like the business owners of West Texas, I have a relentless spirit to build companies.I look forward to helping you with your company’s growth strategy and initiatives.

President, Coo, Board Member | Corporate Strategy, Operational Efficiency, Executive Team LeadershipWatchguard Video May 2013 - Apr 2020Dallas-Fort Worth MetroplexWatchGuard, Inc., acquired by Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) is the market leading provider of mobile video solutions for law enforcement agencies. Over a third of US and Canada agencies depend on WatchGuard’s in-car and body-worn cameras and evidence management software to increase visibility and accountability, improve trust, reduce liability and advance the judicial process.I was approached by the founder, Robert Vanman to become president. Robert’s strength is product development and technology. My strength and passion is building companies, developing management teams and profitably growing organizations.Robert wanted to stay focused on his strength and needed an experienced executive to run day-to-day operations. WatchGuard was growing at the time, but there was significant upside and untapped potential.I joined as president and immediately focused on strategy to implement Robert’s product vision; and process to develop and empower the executive management team. Success parameters were defined. Operational frameworks established. Execution and alignment was set in motion. It was an exciting story culminating in the successful acquisition by Motorola Solutions in late 2019. The company’s products are now part of Motorola’s Video Security Solutions offering. During my tenure, WatchGuard’s growth and profits accelerated significantly. Revenue grew 85% in the last 3 years topping $100M in 2019. EBITDA contribution was equally impressive. Results were recognized by the press and customers. Inc Magazine awarded WatchGuard its Inc. 5000 award -- as a fastest growing private company -- 5 years in a row from 2015 to 2019. Chief Operating Officer | Retail & Consumer Financial Services, International Operations, M&AFirst Cash Financial Services Mar 2008 - Mar 2013Dallas/Fort Worth AreaFirstCash, Inc. is a leading international pawnshop operator with over 2100 locations in the US, Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Colombia. Its retail locations buy and sell a wide variety of jewelry, electronics, tools and other merchandise, and make small customer loans secured by pledged personal property.I joined the executive team as COO in early 2008. The position had been vacant and a former colleague who was on the board approached me. Besides the financial experience, the company needed someone with strong operational experience and proven success at building management teams. The role provided an opportunity to be part of a public company and apply my experience in a new industry. The market during the late 2000’s was ideal. With the economy in recession and gold prices rising, consumers were apt to use our services. Even with this tailwind, the company exceeded market growth rates as we gained market share.Being responsible for the US retail market and leading the expansion into Mexico, I drove growth and operational efficiency. The number of retail locations quadrupled with most of the growth in Mexico. Besides organic growth, we grew through acquisitions. My team was responsible for the successful integration and on-boarding of these M&A targets.A key challenge to sustaining profitable growth in this retail business was recruiting and retaining field management and senior field supervisors. With 90% turnover the norm, growth couldn’t be sustained. I implemented strategies and plans to address the turnover challenge. By the end of my tenure, turnover was reduced significantly. As a result, we had a field management team and structure in place to support and accelerate growth.During the years at FC, the company achieved great financial success. Share price rose from less than $10 to over $60 and market cap increased from $300M to $1.8B. Specialties: Management Leadership, COO, Financial Services, M&A, International Operations -
President & Gm | Growth Strategy, Small Business Productivity Solutions, Operational LeadershipWasp Barcode Technologies Nov 2001 - Mar 2008Dallas/Fort Worth AreaWasp Barcode is a manufacturer of barcode software and hardware productivity solutions for small- and medium-sized businesses (SMB). Based in Plano, TX, Wasp has hundreds of thousands of customers in manufacturing, warehousing & distribution, government and education.During a conversation with the president of Informatics Inc., he outlined a need for a business-oriented, financial executive. It also had a fledgling new division, Wasp Barcode, that showed promise but hadn’t been fully developed as a business.I joined as CFO of Informatics and GM of Wasp Barcode. The opportunity to build Wasp into a company was exhilarating and highly attractive to me. It provided an opportunity to apply my previous business and operational experience to build and grow a company. The time at Wasp was perhaps the most enjoyable point in my career. I led the company building the team and setting strategy. It was a hands-on role as I was actively involved in day-to-day operations. Sales and marketing teams and plans were developed. Major distribution agreements were signed. An omni-channel approach was executed selling direct and through marquis channel partners including Staples, CDW and Fry’s Electronics. Product development was rapid. We expanded our software development teams producing award winning inventory control and asset tracking software that solved the needs of small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs).Sales grew consistently in annual sales representing a 22% CAGR top line growth with consistent high teens EBITDA. Wasp received multiple awards over the years including Inc. 5000 as a fastest growing private company. While the growth and awards were great, I was most proud of the team that was formed. Watching them grow and enjoy success made all the effort worthwhile.Specialties: Small Business, General Management, Financial Management, Operational Leadership -
