My remit as GM is to implement and lead a very large strategic, diverse, highly skilled execution team delivering critical path mining activities across all of BHP operating commodities and assets within Australia. The role included designing the Organisation Structure, Improvement Framework, Employment Model, Standardised Work Packages for performance, Mastery Practices for operators and line leaders, Cost Model and Site Work Package for competitive business cases whilst leading both the team to implement these design principles into practice delivering a new Owner operator model for BHP Mining and the execution team of 1,500 across 10 mine sites in four states of Australia. In a pivot from my usual role, I am currently leading a culture review of a 4,000-person asset after a significant two years of growth (3,000 new starters). Activities include diagonal slice engagement, organisation design assessment and review to understand variations and implement identified change and redefine the asset’s core activities to meet the service requirements of our partners in delivering the organisation’s 2-to-5-year plans and life of asset plans.
Manager Production
As Manager Production, in November 2018, I designed and implemented an organisational operation productivity improvement project across all of BHP’s Australian mining assets to standardise mining processes, implement new technology to connect and monitor performance, reduce risk exposure, and increase labour productivity.
Manager Mining – Mt Whaleback
Mt Whaleback mine is majority-owned and operated by BHP and is one of five iron ore mines the company operates in the Pilbara region. It is the single-biggest open-pit iron ore mine in the world.Delivered an acute focus and direction on safe productivity improvement across a large team (530-plus and a budget spanning hundreds of millions of dollars) which included strategic direction through 5-year planning. Notable Achievements• Implemented a cost effective (approx. $14k per unit) and reliable collision reduction system in conjunction with a third-party technology breakthrough concept that resulted in an increased reporting in near misses (data capture) initially, and then within six months a 70% reduction in near misses between these large mining vehicles.• Drove, through process and engagement, a step change in outcomes for the team in safely delivering year-on-year reductions in fatal/material risk exposure, TRIFR and AIFR. • Led the site team to deliver a 45% improvement on productivity performance from the mining fleets through aligned, benchmarked and data driven initiatives including millions in annual cost reduction initiatives. • Through a strategic focus delivered a year-on-year measured 7% improvement in employee culture as measured through group employee surveys. • Lead the change to decrease mine closure liability through optimised mine rehabilitation and final landform measures.
Manager Mine Performance – Iron Ore
My role was in the operations stream, with a remit to deliver a transformation of the Iron Ore operations mining processes and practices. I spearheaded the group view and directional setting of the five Western Australian Iron Ore Mining sites’ performance through alignment of standards, processes, benchmarks (internal and industry) and measurement. Notable Achievements• Delivered alignment of core mining processes, mine design principles, equipment standards, training, organisation design for production. Mine Standards that met legislative requirements, improvement framework and routines to the Western Australian Iron Ore Asset post the purchase of HWE Mining. This included aligning over 40 load and haul fleets with 3,000 operators and mining leaders to move over 400mt of material in a 12-month time frame.• Engaged with both internal and external stakeholders to help deliver hundreds of millions in benefits. • Contributed to mines debottlenecking analysis to deliver internal growth utilising OEE principles and driver trees.
Sustainable Operations Manager – Norwich Park
The Norwich Park Coal Mine was an open cut coal mine located in Central Queensland. In 2012, the mine closed for economic reasons not because it was exhausted.My remit was to lead the site management of change process focussed on lowering costs and improving productivity aligned to the strategic sustainable plan of the mine. Notable Achievements• Implemented key site infrastructure capital approvals to reduce production delays including debottlenecking key haulage routes, plant and productivity mitigating impact on production. • Drove mine closure activity to offset liability and exceed strategic rehabilitation activities.
Mining Prestrip Manager – Norwich Park
I was responsible for building the mine from a start-up and leading a team of over 450 employees and contractors to safely deliver 55 million cubic metres per annum of overburden material movement and for managing a 9-fleet operation.Notable Achievements• Site Senior Executive and General Manager alternate. • Delivered the Site negotiation of BHP’s Enterprise Agreement. • Development, negotiation and delivery of a 5-year pre-stripping contract (FY11-FY15).
