I was tasked with completing a project, investigating the application of motion detection in visual speech recognition.The hypothesis of the project was to investigate the possible value of motion vectors between video frames as a feature set for visual speech recognition. To accomplish this objective, I created a number of test feature sets built from feature vectors that utilised various motion detection methods and computer vision methods for detecting information in an image. These feature sets were created using various combinations of the motion vectors and frame information detection algorithms, that were varied over frame resolution and frame rate. Using an available database of marked speech videos. I tested machine learning algorithms to train against the database, using various combinations of the feature sets I made. The feature sets where then compared recursively over the database using different sub sections for the database to train and test the value of the feature sets to the machine learning program..The results of using this kind of test architecture allowed me to compare results based on different combinations of feature vector across the defined visual elements of speech. To see not only if the motion vectors could not only improve the overall accuracy and effectiveness of the speech recognition, but to also see in what particular elements of speech the motion vectors can improve performance the most.
