In 2020 my future was beamed on the clouds, much like Batman’s logo. We experienced a national health epidemic and the country stood still. In many respects, I was helpless and felt like I needed to take action. Not helpless in the sense that I was unable to participate in my usual activities like going to the movies, the gym, or satisfying my sushi fix when everything was closed. It was because many companies were paralyzed and couldn’t service their customers effectively. I knew I could help. I often use apps or take online training for class or personal reasons. Many times I thought to myself, “Wow. This app is terrible” or “This training was a waste of my time”.Brick-and-mortar schools and colleges struggled to communicate and connect with their students. The curtain had been pulled back. Technology and all of its possibilities were on center stage, but without the benefit of a dress rehearsal. Hello, virtual collaboration and hybrid training. When my own personal needs weren’t being met, I came to the conclusion that something needs to be done, and I wanted to contribute. It was time for me to formally educate myself to make lives easier for those who will rely on technology to learn and communicate for the foreseeable future. In 2021 I enrolled in a Master’s program and obtained certificates in Instructional and User Experience Design. As a web designer with 17+ years of experience, I enjoy servicing my clients and feel a sense of pride when I receive another 5-star review on Google or maintain a 100% on-time project deliverables rate. As the saying goes, there is no “I” in a team. My friends often refer to me as “Superman” because I tend to go out of my way to save someone’s day.I’ve learned that in order to become great at something, the work needs to be put in and reworked until it's sufficient enough to be presented. In a way, it resembles my career as a professional drug-free bodybuilder and parallels the User Experience process. Competition is always going to get better and evolve. I’m reminded that in order to keep up, I need to constantly adjust my training style in order to stay competitive.Fast forward to 2023. I am on the verge of graduating this summer and am excited to combine my skills as a web and graphic designer and converge them with newly acquired education in the Instructional Design and Learning Experience Design fields to create interactive online training.
