Elaborated the vision of the founder with regards to the range of intelligent behavior that a virtual travel concierge should have. Specifically I reviewed candidate technologies and performed technical prototype implementations for semantic topic maps, hadoop-friendly recommendation engines, and feature-scoring rule engines.Prototyped a set of rules for the open source Drools rules engine that queried a travel vendor API for hotel item details in response to a query. Furthermore I evaluated and prototyped a third party API that performed intelligent query parameter extraction from natural English when booking travel.Explored the sorts of friendly intelligent dialog the virtual concierge should have with human users. Evaluated voice recognition, text to speech, and dialog processing options for mobile devices.

Imported and mapped 100K+ word senses from WordNet and Wikitionary.Created the RDF Entity Manager which persists Java objects into an RDF store.Created a comprehensive English lexicon by merging the OpenCyc lexicon, WordNet, The CMU Pronouncing Dictionary, and Wiktionary in RDF.Created Incremental Fluid Construction Grammar which is a cognitively-plausible, bidirectional grammar for an English dialog system with semantics expressed in RDF.Created Bayesian collocated-words versus word-sense-disambiguation model for the sense-tagged Brown Corpora provided by Wordnet. This is an important component of the construction parser as word sense disambiguation proceeds incrementally, word by word, left to right - and less probable alternatives are pruned from the otherwise exponentially growing interpretation tree.

Programmer and technical project manager.Self-study in Java: Wrote a Lisp language interpreter and implementation for a substantial portion of public Cyc Knowledge Base API.Lead programmer and batch architect for Customer Information System II (CIS II), mission-critical service order and billing system.During multi-year development and implementation of CIS II, significantly contributed to its design and programming, working with over 150 programmers to implement most successful large-utility Customer System upgrade. Wrote financial accounting core and was responsible for 30 DB2 tables having hundreds of millions of rows, out of a system of over 500 tables. Designed and reviewed numerous SQL statements in mainframe environment. Sophisticated batch system consisted of up to ten parallel tasks at each step of evening processing. Database tables were laid out so that account number ranges, the primary key, were processed in parallel without locking delays and with optimal disk storage physical arrangement.Supervised CIS II batch maintenance. Supervised mainframe staff of 15 to couple new CIS II system with new and legacy enterprise billing and service order systems.Technical supervisor of Field Work Management System Pen-Based Computing. Lead programmer for Smalltalk-based graphics tablet application, enabling utility field personnel to conduct energy audits with pen gestures.Supervisor and lead programmer of Online Payment Locations (OPAL) project, leading a team of 12 developers and analysts. Ambitious project used Internet to connect thin client workstations at 75 payment agent locations in Florida with legacy mainframe remittance processing system.Designed Gemstone object oriented database as middleware and used a Java servlet to interact with pay stations and encrypted data stream.Managed project OPAL’s numerous technical innovations that won for FPL the 1998 competition of prestigious utility-industry ULTRA award.

Programmed the billing system supplied to several client wireline telephone companies. Assisted with programming for pager and cellular billing systems. The company's mainframe computer system processed about half of the total cellular telephone bills in the USA at the time. I enjoyed troubleshooting and was one of the few staff encouraged to work paid overtime when customer crises arose.
