“Money makes a good servant but a bad master.”My supervisor told me this at my very first job washing dishes for a local restaurant. Despite the years that have flown by since then, I remember those particular words of wisdom for a simple reason—they explain why I do what I do. As an investment management professional, I strive to help others make their money work for them, not against them. Achieving this goal demands that I exercise my creativity, leverage my strong work ethic, and indulge my incessant desire to learn. Fortunately, there is no shortage of creative approaches to help analyze investment returns and risks with the intent of maximizing the former and minimizing the latter. Factor modeling, forecasting algorithms, optimization, machine learning, application development…I have employed all of these methods with great interest and with measurable success. The application of these analytical techniques is not only rewarding by helping transform a vast amount of financial data into digestible, useful conclusions; I have also thoroughly enjoyed developing the skills required to apply these techniques, including coding proficiency (R, R Shiny, Keras) and a deeper understanding of statistics. Yet, I realize there is so much more to learn and innovate. Knowing this, I cannot help but remain excited every day to confront the unique challenge of securing investment gains and avoiding investment losses with professionalism and analytical rigor. I believe that any client for whom I work deserves nothing less.
