About Stephen Sandford

I am energized by constant innovation, emerging energy technologies, and collaborative efforts to identify actionable solutions to fight climate change. With a deep understanding of both the underlying engineering behind energy projects and the financing elements which bring them to reality, I hope to make an impact in the renewable energy industry.I currently am a Senior Commodity Specialist at Amazon Web Services, where I oversee a number of energy related initiatives, ranging from the sourcing strategy of High Voltage substation equipment to the commercial evaluation of emerging technologies like Advanced Geothermal Systems. In this role, I manage AWS’ relationships with vendors throughout the energy industry and oversee the proposal process for a variety of different types of projects. I am a 2023 MBA graduate from Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business, where I focused on the intersection of business and the renewable energy industry. During my two years at Dartmouth, I developed significant knowledge of energy markets, project valuation, project finance, and the renewable energy procurement process. These skills built upon my Mechanical Engineering background and previous post-graduate work while gaining my Wind Energy Engineering Graduate Certificate.

  • Phillips 66
    Reliability Engineer
    Phillips 66 Jun 2017 - Jul 2021
    Linden, Nj
I was responsible for the reliability of all rotating equipment in one of the four major sections of the Bayway Oil Refinery. This comprised of more than 200 pumps, 15 large compressors, and a 17 Megawatt Power Recovery Train. Some of the responsibilities I had are listed below. Reliability – Identified problems occurring with specific pieces of equipment and created action plans to mitigate the issues. Worked with maintenance team to develop and implement reliability initiatives across the refinery. Operational Monitoring – Oversaw day-to-day operation of major hydrocarbon compressors. Utilized Bentley Nevada System 1 software to identify issues and analyze vibration signatures. Completed evaluations of the effects of process conditions on machinery performance.Capital Projects – Assisted Project Managers in completion of all rotating equipment related projects. This consisted of working with vendors, evaluating proposals, redlining drawings and product selection. The projects I led had budgets ranging from $150,000 to $3 million.Optimization – Evaluated current unit operational limitations related to pumps and compressors. When constraints were discovered, a deeper analysis was completed to understand if machine performance could be enhanced. Troubleshooting – Supported operations personnel when pumps and compressors had performance issues. A detailed understanding of the overall system as well as the machinery itself was necessary. This required working with a cross functional team to identify the root cause of the issue. Once identified, an action plan was created and executed in a timely manner to minimize any incurred production losses.
