A Japanese Quality instructor once mentioned that the 'Americans' always want to do one, big project. Include everything. Get as close to perfect as we can.Sounds good. We want to make things better. Nothing wrong with that.Well, except time and money. We don't want to shut down, even for a minute. And somebody always brings up the budget.Our conversation went on to the concept of Continuous Improvement. Great strides are not critical if we can just keep those small steps going. If a tray is a bit too far to reach, move it closer. If the table top is too low, raise it a few inches. Sure, do a transformation project when you have the time and money, but never stop with the Continuous Improvement.And the best source for ideas of how to improve will come from the person using the equipment. This is the person that has an in-depth understanding of every movement in the operation. "Sure, I have an idea. Fix that stupid post. I scratch my hand on that almost every day". Fix the post! Seemed irrelevant, but it just became important. Follow up a few leads from that associate, and the ideas will get better. And quality will get better as this person feels the pull as an active member of the team.Everybody must be on-board to effectively maintain a continuous improvement attitude. And everybody knows it is the American Way to beat the competition. Sure, we may be the best in cost and quality. But we cannot allow the competition to pass us up. They will not stop pursuing us. A short discussion on intent, and we will all be ready to keep thinking at all times, thinking of ways to improve.And the best place to start is with a 5S approach. Only what is needed, and everything in its place. Cleanliness and organization are the first big steps to continuously improve.
