Dr. Tatter's primary laboratory and clinical research interest is the use of image guidance to introduce therapeutic viruses, drugs, and devices into the human brain for treatment of brain and pituitary tumors and of movement and functional disorders. He is a clinically busy neurosurgeon at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He is the Co-director of the Wake Forest University Gamma Knife Center.Dr. Tatter earned his medical doctorate at Cornell University Medical College and simultaneously earned his Ph.D. in the Virology Laboratory of Professors Igor Tamm and Purnell Choppin studying the inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 with Drs. Pravinkumar Sehgal and Lester May at The Rockefeller University in New York and where he completed his qualification in Cell Biology with Professor Gunther Blobel, Nobel Laureate in Physiology and Medicine. Dr. Tatter completed his neurosurgical residency and postdoctoral fellowship in Prof. Ole Isacson's Neuroregeneration Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.Clinically, Dr. Tatter’s surgical interests focus on delivering therapies directly into the brain using image-guided techniques, reducing the risks of surgery, and maximizing the extent of safe tumor resection and laser ablation. Dr. Tatter performs stereotactic radiosurgery using the Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion to treat brain and pituitary tumors, trigeminal neuralgia, and brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) taking advantage of its precision to achieve the goals of surgery without the need for a surgical incision. He has large experience with MRI-thermometry-guided laser thermocoagulation to ablate tumors and radiation necrosis. He employs deep brain stimulation to treat movement disorders and functional brain diseases. He has contributed to the US FDA approval of Neurosurgical devices.
