I founded and led Helpful, a digital communication skills agency from 2010 to 2021.Helpful helps public, private and charity sector organisations to optimise their communications in good times and in crisis, using modern techniques and low cost tools. Services include digital communication strategy, coaching and training in social media skills, crisis preparedness assessment and simulations, and wider audience engagement online.Like most founders, I was intimately involved in the work of the company for several years, including website development, training delivery and crisis simulation facilitation. We expanded to the USA in 2017 and grew that business to around $500k turnover. Over the last 3-4 years, I've focussed on overseeing the business as a whole, and our suite of products. After the divestment of our website build business in 2020, I worked with the leadership team to support a management buyout in April 2021 and made my exit shortly afterwards.

Directing the digital communications output of the Department across corporate web, Directgov, Businesslink, social media and intranet channels. Leading efforts to get the Department to engage with partners and stakeholders including through social media, online communities and effective digital publishing.(When DIUS was merged with BERR in July 2009, I took on the role of overseeing the combined digital communications team, having formerly been Head of Social Media at DIUS.)
