Steph Johnson, an award-winning multi-dimensional songwriter, recording artist, and true force for positive change. Steph deftly blends jazz, soul, funk, and blues within her distinctive vocals. Through her 20-year music career, Steph has recorded five studio albums.In 2016, Steph directed her creative energy towards social activism, co-founding Voices of Our City Choir with the late Nina Deering. What began as an organic collaboration between local musicians and people experiencing homelessness has grown into an internationally recognized performance ensemble andinnovative nonprofit that uses music and arts to amplify the voices of people impacted by homelessness. Steph now serves as Voices’ Chief Executive Officer and Creative Director.Last year, New York Times identified Voices of Our City Choir as “a promising solution and progress in addressing homelessness”. Under Steph’s artistic direction, the Choir has performed publiclyover 100 times, including collaborations with the San Diego Symphony and Jason Mraz. In 2022, the National Conflict Resolution Center awarded Voices the San Diego Peacemakers Award for its work in advocacy and changing perceptions around homelessness. In 2020, the Choir's original song, "Sounds of the Sidewalk", garnered Voices' national attention winning the Golden Buzzer on NBC's America's Got Talent. They catapulted to the semi-finals, where Voices' mission and music connected to the hearts of millions. Steph’s work, and the formation of the Choir, was featured in the 2018 award-winning documentary "The Homeless Chorus Speaks" which aired nationally on PBS. Steph’s tireless dedication to her craft and the unsheltered community has earned her well-deserved recognitions, including 2020 “Woman of the Year”, a finalist for San Diego Magazine’s 2022 Activist of the Year, as well as “California Arts Champion” by Californians for the Arts, exemplifying Steph’s profound impact on the arts and society at large.
