I'm an engineer and researcher interested in innovative solutions for climate change and biodiversity preservation. At Natel Energy, I focus on novel approaches to understanding and improving fish passage through hydropower turbines, and use those insights to inform fish-safe turbine designs that enable survival rates over 98% for a wide range of migratory fish species and turbine operating conditions.

Senior Mechanical EngineerNatel Energy Aug 2019 - Aug 2022Alameda, Ca, Us• Defining the hydraulic performance and operational loads for the turbine design team using CFD simulation outputs and postprocessing of data in Python.• Developing tools to enable fish-safe hydraulic turbine design combined with high performance and economic feasibility.• Designed and led hydraulic performance testing of the first D55 Restoration Hydro Turbine (RHT) at the Natel hydraulic test loop facility.• Designed and led live fish blade strike testing at Alden Laboratory to investigate the effects of turbine blade leading edge thickness and slant angle on survival, the results of which are being published in the Journal of Ecohydraulics. Also led "sensor fish" strike testing in collaboration with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) at the Alden strike facility. -
Mechanical EngineerNatel Energy Jun 2017 - Aug 2019Alameda, Ca, Us• Designed a waterproof, wireless sensor data acquisition system and created data processing tools in Matlab to collect cyclic loading data on the Linear Pelton hydro turbine powertrain. Helped develop the team’s understanding of powertrain dynamics and loading to drive component- and system-level design. • Coordinated the development of multibody dynamics models of the Linear Pelton to aid in the design of large-scale, belt-based linear powertrain machinery.• Led a collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to model net revenue and downstream flow impact tradeoffs of distributed, networked hydropower on the Yuba River (published in Environmental Research Communications Volume 1, 2019).• Designed a testing machine for fatiguing turbine blades under normal operating loads to 10 million cycles. -
InternWeber Group At Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Jun 2014 - Aug 2014Berkeley, Ca, Us• Measured proton-transfer and microporous membrane transport properties for use in a redox flow battery for automotive applications, and presented a research paper and poster noting conclusions.• Performed inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) for the measurement of ion crossover through various membranes. -
Undergraduate ResearcherMit Lienhard Group Jan 2014 - May 2014• Performed scaling and fouling tests and analysis on a Membrane Distillation experimental setup in the Rohsenow Kendall Heat Transfer Laboratory.• Constructed an acid cleaning system for the maintenance of the membrane after high salinity testing.
-
ResearcherCiemat Jun 2013 - Aug 2013Madrid, Comunidad De Madrid, Es• Constructed experimental setups for the Solar Cell Calibration Laboratory, specially prepared to conduct measurements of high-efficiency multijunction photovoltaic solar cells.• Characterized various multijunction solar cell samples and investigated the radiative recombination emission distribution over the area of each subcell.• Worked extensively with space-quality solar technology and measurement and instrumentation systems. -
Undergraduate ResearcherMit Nanoengineering Group May 2012 - Oct 2012• Researched thin-film crystalline silicon photovoltaics and designed a test bed compatible with the characterization of these new cells.• Utilized SolidWorks and machine shop skills while creating a useful test fixture prototype for the MIT NanoEngineering Group.• Helped assemble a photovoltaic quantum efficiency measurement system for the Rohsenow Kendall Heat Transfer Lab.
-
InternEfficient Drivetrains Jun 2011 - Aug 2011Milpitas, Ca, Us• Researched methods for using plug-in hybrid vehicle technology to store energy from intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar to smooth the operation of the electrical grid.• Modeled a continuously variable transmission for a light truck using computer-aided design.
