Steve Bartell is by training and profession a quantitative analyst and mathematical modeler of complex ecological and environmental systems. He has become a biophysical economist through desire and necessity. He demonstrates a keen interest in the efficient and effective transfer of advances in basic research and development to practical applications in support of environmental and economic assessments. Bartell offers extensive technical skills and experience in ecosystem analysis and ecological modeling. He demonstrates modeling capabilities that include individual-oriented models, demographic population models, bioenergetics-based models of populations, communities, and ecosystems, and spatially-explicit watershed models. He is the originator of the Comprehensive Aquatic System Model (CASM). Bartell has applied these skills and models in assessing ecological risks posed by a variety of physical, chemical, and biological environmental stressors. Bartell has also used his modeling skills to project the likely outcomes of large-scale ecosystem management and restoration actions. Bartell has more recently focused his interests on modeling and assessment at the interface of ecology and economics with a focus on sustainable development. He applies methods of systems analysis and modeling to explore local and regional ecological and biophysical economic implications of global change. He examines the likely effectiveness of proposed technologies, for example, renewable energy and carbon capture, as well as efficiency gains in redressing climate change impacts. He is the inventer of the Corporate Sustainability Assessment Model (CorSAM). Bartell insists that civilization must rapidly move to an economy consistent with the ecological concept of dynamic carrying capacity. We must re-imagine what it means to be human on an ever increasingly challenged planet Earth. We must re-invent our economic system to be compatible with the biophysical processes that define and sustain Life on Earth.
