Introduction:I am a Director of MHM Trustee Services Ltd, acting as a professional pension scheme trustee. I am also an AMAPPT (a fully accredited member of the Association of Professional Pension Trustees).As a former scheme actuary (until 2023), I work primarily with defined benefit (DB) pension schemes, but I am also involved with some defined contribution (DC) pension schemes.My journey so far:I started my career as an actuarial student with Mercer in London. There was a fantastic team of senior actuaries to learn from. I qualified as an actuary while in London and then transferred to Mercer’s Leeds office.After spending 12 years at Mercer, I moved to a small firm of actuaries, consultants, and administrators. It was called S G Ingram: Actuary Limited and it was here that I first met David Hodgson. We worked together for the next 10 years.Fast forward a few more years and I am delighted to be working with David again.My experience:Prior to becoming a pension scheme trustee, I was a scheme actuary for over 20 years. I have mainly worked with smaller DB pension schemes (<£100 million), supporting both trustees and sponsoring employers with all aspects of running such schemes, including bulk annuity purchases and wind-ups. I also have experience of DC schemes.MHM and my current role:At MHM, we work with private businesses, PLCs, UK subsidiaries of overseas businesses, and not-for-profit organisations. We add value for our clients. Here is how we do this:o We solve pension problems by ensuring trustees and employers work together to identify their strategic objectives and attain their goalso We make sure our approach for each client is suited to that client’s needs and budgeto We use investment strategies to manage financial riskso We ensure clients and pension scheme members receive clear communicationsAs part of MHM Trustee Services, I carry out the trustee role for both DB and DC schemes. In some of these cases, MHM is appointed as the sole trustee. In others, we are chair of trustees and/or a co-trustee.
