Co-founder and executive director of Valid International. I am a specialist in nutrition and public health with a focus on the design, set-up and research of community-based nutrition programmes and humanitarian relief interventions. I devised, designed, obtained funding for the initial research and managed the Community-based Therapeutic Care (CTC) research and development programme. This new model changed the paradigm for the treatment of Severe Acute Malnutrition away from the traditional inpatient approach into a decentralised system of community-based care, treating cases in their homes rather than in inpatient therapeutic feeding units. As part of the development programme we collected and published data on nearly 25,000 cases of Severe Acute Malnutrition, demonstrating that the new model dramatically reduced mortality rates and increased coverage when compared with traditional inpatient treatment. In 2007 the UN adopted the new model under the name of the Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM). Subsequently, I have lead Valid's research and development work to develop and roll out new techniques to monitor the impact of nutrition and public health programmes. These new techniques have now been adopted worldwide as the gold standard for evaluating the impact of CMAM programmes. I have an extensive background in the treatment of acute malnutrition with 30 years of expertise in technical support, needs assessment, evaluation, research, the manufacture of ready to use foods and implementation of nutrition programmes across Africa and Asia.
