As a 50-something I've been lucky enough (I think it's luck) to witness the rapid growth of technology, from the early days (1989-ish Pre-windows) working in software and later selling PCs for Evesham Micro's. I have witnessed the birth of wireless networking, mobile communications, gaming & the internet. Even AV wasn't a thing when I started work, unless you count an overhead or slide projector!The OHP was probably my first interaction with AV, using a RGB 4:3 overlay plugged into the VGA port of a (really expensive colour) laptop for Sales Presentations. I have spent the majority of my career in sales of some description, but particularly focussed on education, from working at Promethean selling IWBs directly to schools, to Impact Marcom where I cut my ProAV teeth (eventually) working mainly on Higher Education Frameworks.Within the AV industry I have worked directly with end-users, been in ProAV integration, worked for a major distributor and most recently a manufacturer. This has been a useful (maybe even necessary) career path to understand the roles and responsibilities of the customers I interact with, which allows me to tailor the conversation to keep it relevant and targeted. Moreover, for my particular role at here WyreStorm, it was critical I understood the whole sales cycle as well as possessing a high level of understanding of signal distribution technology and its various applications. Customers appreciate it when you know what their business needs without asking them what they do!I enjoy being presented with a customer "scenario" and asked "What would you do?" - I enjoy designing video solutions, using open questions to understand use-case, physical limitations/environment, as well as understanding level of user interaction/knowledge etc. so I can suggest the right level of technology.Unfortunately I was diagnosed with Cancer in 2022 and with it a rare autoimmune response which has affected my movement and so driving and walking long distances is a problem these days -Don't get me started on stairs! So site surveys, product demos etc., are strictly for the youngsters. I largely work from home managing design/product enquires, delivering online sales & product training and responsible for seeking new customers and business development with our loyal customer base.
