My wife and I got started by inviting 18 middle school youth over to our living room on a Monday night in 1994. Our first youth center was opened in 1998 and we currently have 5 youth centers. We are unique, in that we provide our services at no cost to kids, ages 6 to 18, and we simply rely on community support to fund our existence. I am very much reliant on God and my faith as the Executive Director. On most days the task of operating the centers is simply impossible in realistic terms. Even though there may be little or no money to work with, I simply approach each day by doing the best with what I have, much like the story of the fishes and loaves in the Bible. I was the lone staff person at our first youth center in 1998 and had only a handful of kids to work with. Bridges For Youth Centers currently serve over 500 kids, ages 6 to 18, at our facilities after school. The centers are open 180 days a year. The kids we serve are primarily from low income and very at risk situations. As the Execurtive Director I espouse the basic principle of 'never giving up on any kid. I manage a staff of 10 part-time youth centers workers who are mostly Christian college students.Currently we have 4 Springfield Bridges Centers: 834 N. National, 1039 W. Nichols and 2143 W. High, 1230 W. Madison . Marshfield Bridges at 403 S. Marshall, Marshfield, Mo. Centers are open Monday through Friday throughout the school year, from 2:30-5:30 Mon. - Thursday and until 8:30 on Friday night when a free meal is served to all the kids. The 1230 W. Madison property across from McGregor Elementary in Springfield was purchased in 2009. It was a dilapidated building with the roof caving in, but in the best of locations to do a lot of good for kids.
