My research program focuses on integrating continental and marine ichnology with sedimentology, stratigraphy, and paleontology in siliciclastic, carbonate, and mixed sedimentary systems to interpret: (1) environments of deposition (EOD); (2) sedimentation and accumulation rates; (3) subaerial exposure and pedogenesis; (4) major shifts in base level and/or sea level; (5) biologic mediation of effective porosity and permeability; and (6) significant surfaces for correlation. My research uses both modern and ancient field and laboratory studies in continental and marine sedimentary systems to understand organism-sediment interactions and the physicochemical controls through space and time. Physicochemical controls in continental and marine systems are distinct, but can result in similar bioturbation patterns. Correctly evaluating subtle differences can have important implications for interpreting EODs. Temporal (stratigraphic) changes of trace fossil diversity, abundance, distribution, and resultant textures likewise provide clues to environmental and climatic processes and perturbations that help shape sedimentary bodies. This research has practical applications through core and outcrop analog studies. Reservoir characterization that integrates ichnology refines EOD interpretations, which help reduce uncertainty. For example, ichnology can provide insights into the continuity and connectivity of reservoir and seal geometries, which commonly result from subtle mixed environmental influences rather than from single processes. These efforts, particularly through core descriptions, facies interpretations, and EOD confirmations, provide a range of analogs for incorporation into workflows and models. For exploration, ichnologic-lithofacies patterns can be used to help predict regional facies trends for future drilling. For production and development, they can be used to help understand field history and appropriate completion strategies.
