So I devised a strategy of high profile radio and TV interviews, creating new angles each time to maintain momentum. Motoring writer - it's a way up there in the list of jobs that boys most want to do when they grow up. But it's not all showboating in Ferraris and Astons. You have to know and entertain your audience and that's what I aimed to do across the multiple award-winning Kent on Sunday family of publications and sites. The petrolheads can have their specialist mags, I simply wanted to write good sense about everyday cars people buy with their hard-earned cash, wrapping this with an off-the-wall and, hopefully, entertaining delivery.I was also motoring editor for Kent Life - a sister publication to the Kent on Sunday series within the Archant group - where I concentrate on cars particularly suited to those living a rural lifestyle in The Garden of England.

I was asked to take over and revive the business section within the Kent on Sunday series in Oct 2009. This was re-launched in early 2010 as Business Week with fast-updated online news and video support plus e-mailed editions twice weekly and became the most sought after business forum in the county. Highlights were the double-page Big Interview, highly opinionated yet entertaining comment, and a determination to be as upbeat as possible on behalf of a beleaguered business community. The last thing I wanted was to be part of a media campaign to talk us into a double-dip recession, but I was drowned out on that one wasn't I?

As the name implies, Innput specialised in drinks industry clients. For more than a decade the team looked after major players including Holsten, Bacardi-Martini, Courage, First Drinks (including Grants, Stolichnaya, Campari and Tio Pepe) and worked with the key writers and publications in the sector. Innput never had to pitch for new work; all our clients approached us through word of mouth and our proven track record of placing editorial in the places that mattered to drinks trade buyers and customers.

The leading motor trade valuation guide had never felt a need for public relations before but the competition was growing, so I was given every PR man's dream: a blank sheet of paper. I recognised that the big media outlets had their own used car gurus and the best Glass's Guide could hope for was a quick quote in corroboration of their views, but the regional outlets and magazines absolutely loved my ghost-written pieces from the editors of the used car oracle - the cuttings file just grew and grew. I also formalised the thought of every car dealer and started referring to the Guide in print as 'the bible'...all lower case, of course.

I edited Tubeline - a staff newspaper created for London Underground in the aftermath of the King's Cross tragedy - as well as several other titles, while also writing copy for prestigious annual reports published by several blue chip companies such as Crown Paints and David S Smith. I commissioned other contractors for key projects and publications too.I also had the chance to wear some sharp double-breasted suits and ties. What happened to all that...and when are they coming back in?
