Professor Steve Maggs, joined WMG at the University of Warwick in 1999 after a number of years in industry. He completed a Technician Apprenticeship with the UK Ministry of Defence (Sea Systems) after leaving school and worked for a short while as a Professional and Technological Officer in the MoD. He then studied BEng Metallurgy at Leeds University where he stayed to study for an industrially sponsored PhD examining casting defects in commercial aluminium alloys. He worked as a Development Metallurgist for Alcan International and then an Armour and Material Technologist for Alvis Vehicles. When he joined WMG he created training programmes on the CADCAM in Schools Programme, and then moved onto the undergraduate team, teaching Materials, Manufacturing and CADCAM. He has taught on UK, Industrial and International programmes at Undergraduate and Master’s level and has successfully supervised a number of doctoral students. He was Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education until December 2022. He led on programmes including part-time undergraduate degrees and degree apprenticeships in Engineering, Digital and Digital Healthcare as well as full time courses in Engineering, Digital Health, and Cyber Security. Under his leadership, Undergraduate numbers in WMG rose from zero to around 800 students. Industrial partners include Jaguar Land Rover, Ford, Thales, MTC, Network Rail, Rolls Royce and Dyson. Steve led on the development and delivery of the Engineering Degree Apprenticeship with Dyson, which is delivered on-site in Malmsbury for the Dyson Institute of Engineering Technology, who would later go on to achieve Degree Awarding Powers. Steve was involved in the setting up the WMG Academy for Young Engineers, which is a University Technical College for 14 to 18 year olds. He was Deputy Chair of Governors and has assisted in setting up a second WMG Academy for Young Engineers in Solihull, Birmingham. Steve took on the role of Director of Alumni and Industrial engagement in Dec 22 and now works alongside the Development, Alumni and Engagement office at the university developing new ways to engage with WMG’s 27000 alumni, as well as improving the industrial engagement with our educational programmes.
