The enthusiastic research culture embraces new challenging areas, including strong collaborations with other academic disciplines and institutions, while maintaining a powerful presence in the traditional core areas of chemistry.The Chemistry Department hosts around 200 postdoctoral research staff, over 250 postgraduate students, and around 60 academic staff, including newly independent researchers.My role is a brand new one. The key points will be liaising with Academics, to ensure compliance for all major, >£10k, purchases, coordinate purchases under HEFCE funding rounds, act as a facilitator between the Dept and Central Procurement Services on high value purchases , liaising with Suppliers, organising Tenders, organising and maintaining the Department's Fixed Asset register, the list goes on. It is the largest department with in the University of Cambridge (accounting for 10% of the University) and encompasses a huge diversity and variety of activities. It employs 636 members of staff of whom 160 are academic/academic related, 187 are assistants and 289 are research staff. It has some 666 postgraduate students and some 1,200 undergraduates and has an annual budget of £25m. My role makes me the primary point of contact for all purchasing related matters, within the Department, for all of those people. I try to ensure that, along with my small team, each person is given a first class level of service. My key role is to manage the operation of the Purchasing Office, incorporating the raising and placement of all orders(an average of around 70 per day) and the processing of suppliers invoices including approval for payment as necessary and to offer advice and guidance on the sourcing of any, and all, commodities, as required, throughout the Department. This can be as diverse as buying everything from a box of screws to a Laser. There is never a dull moment!! Show less
