About Steve Mckee
I am a Technical Director and Software Engineer for the Child Health Informatics Research and Development Lab (CHIRDL) in the Indiana University School of Medicine. I lead a group of three software engineers and one user interface developer. Being in research gives my team great opportunities to learn new programming languages and development tools.My team's most well-known software is Child Health Improvement through Computer Automation (CHICA). CHICA is Computer Decision Support System (CDSS), and it has over 50 publications resulting from federal research funding. The software has a patient-centered component that acquires input from patients and provides alerts to clinicians using prioritized logic rules based on the user's input plus such things as vitals, encounter diagnoses, etc. Our latest rendition of the software pertains to child neurology (CHICA-CN) and is in collaboration with the Child Neurology Foundation (https://www.childneurologyfoundation.org/chica-cn/). This included a new build of CHICA to conform to the SMART on FHIR standard. This standard allows CHICA-CN to directly integrate with the Epic Electronic Medical Record system. It's currently a listed app in the Epic Vendor Services program.CHIRDL recently developed our first iOS application using Swift and SwiftUI called Set Brave (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/set-brave/id1622186568). This is an app for children having incontinence issues with their Spina Bifida diagnosis. It allows them to set goals, helping them through their day. It offers users the ability to set alarms that result in push notifications, assisting them with their goals.CHIRDL developed the Osteosarcoma Decision Aid website (https://osteosarcomadecisionaid.com) in collaboration with Dr. Janet Panoch and the Osteosarcoma Collaborative. This is an internationally recognized decision aid for children and adolescents faced with surgical decisions relating to osteosarcoma. It provides the pro and cons for each surgery option, personal accounts from people who had each type of surgery, items to discuss with the doctor, and many other areas.The projects above are just a sample of what my team can build. Being a research lab, we are great at pivoting to support our customers. This, at times, means quickly learning new programming languages and tools to develop the projects.

I lead a group of four highly talented software and database developers. Our main product is a Computer Decision Support System (CDSS) called CHICA (Child Health Improvement through Computer Automation). CHICA is built using multiple technologies such as Java, JavaScript, HTML5, JQuery, CSS, XML, and JSON. CHICA is currently deployed in two major hospital systems in the Indianapolis area, Eskenazi and Indiana University Health. CHICA provides decision support options for physicians through there medical system's EHR based on questionnaires completed by patients on tablets provided to them in the waiting room.We also have multiple other projects besides CHICA. We currently perform data mining techniques for Indiana University Health to provide reports on maternal newborn health indicators. We also started a new project to help teenagers with traumatic injuries deal with opioid use during recovery.
