Strathewen

In February 2009, my family property and my community of Strathewen were devastated by major bushfires. I was instrumental in the development of the Strathewen Community Renewal Association (Inc) and held the position of Deputy Chair for 2 years. I also chaired the Memorials Working Group and participated in the ‘Telling our Stories’ and ‘Safer Strathewen’ project working groups. The Association won the 2010 Australian Safer Communities Award, State and National Award, Volunteer and Community Section, for its best practice management of community recovery.

Municipal Emergency Resource OfficerMunicipal Fire Prevention OfficerCrime PreventionRoad SafetyGraffiti ManagementIn my role as Coordinator Emergency Management with Knox City Council (1999 – 2010), I developed and led Council’s approach to community focused emergency management, preparing emergency management plans, planning and delivering major emergency management exercises, and leading the response to a number of community emergencies. I developed and trained an emergency management team of over 100 staff from within Council, including Municipal Emergency Resource Officers (MERO), Municipal Recovery Managers (MRM), Emergency Relief Centre managers and staff, Municipal Emergency Coordination Centre (MECC) support staff, and conducted a number of emergency management awareness events for staff, senior management and Councillors. In 2008/09 I was seconded to Municipal Association of Victoria as Manager Local Government Liaison for the Integrated Fire Management Planning project.During my time at Knox City Council I also chaired the Municipal Emergency Management Enhancement Group (MEMEG), leading or participating in a number of state level emergency management developments including chairing the MECC Guidelines Working Group, initiating the development of municipal resource sharing protocols, participating in development of Emergency Relief Centre Guidelines and in reviews of sections 4 and 6 of the Emergency Management Manual Victoria.
