About Steve Phillips
At 44 years of age, and graduating with a Journalism degree in 2001, I’ve worked for over 23 years in salaried and project-based employment across radio, television, opera and arts management, most recently launching artists agency Steve Phillips Management.Between 2008 and 2010 I undertook postgraduate vocal training at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), whilst continuing to pursue arts administration and management on a freelance basis for Alexander McCall Smith, Malcolm Martineau and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, then working as a freelance singer for British Youth Opera, Scottish Opera, Garsington Opera and Raymond Gubbay's Aida at the Royal Albert Hall.In 2012 I started work at Opera North and was co-opted onto the Senior Management Team for two-and-a-half years whilst managing the Chorus. Since then I’ve run Oxenfoord International Summer School, a residential summer school for singers and accompanists based in Scotland, and have undertaken additional freelance work for Charles Court Opera (at the King's Head, London, Iford Festival and International G&S Festival, Harrogate) and Leeds Lieder, launching the Leeds Lieder Young Artists in 2018.In recent years I’ve undertaken fixed term contracts as Company Manager at The Grange Festival and Chorus Manager at Welsh National Opera (during the COVID-19 pandemic) and at the National Opera Studio. I now fix the Chorus for Opera Rara’s recording and concert series, alongside management of the roster of Steve Phillips Management.
