Steve's experience as an educator spans 36 years beginning with a private military residential school (Robert Land Academy), an elementary school, a vocational 'magnet' school, a brand new secondary school and one of the oldest schools in the province. That was all as a teacher! As a new Vice Principal Steve moved to Henry Street High School in Whitby, ON and then worked to open the first new high school in Oshawa in over 30 years, Maxwell Heights Secondary School. Described as 'tough when he needs to be' by a student, and 'a guy who digs for diamonds' by staff, Steve works at building respect in the school (for everyone from everyone) and personal responsibility and accountability (by everyone in the building). Schools used to have the luxury of being able to triage students and stream them into different directions, by default leaving the weakest students to drop out into the world of work. This is no longer an option as 'high school dropout' does not offer as many opportunities, and we as a society have fewer young people to carry the burden of an aging population into their retirement. We cannot be passive. Our job is to find what it takes for students to be successful; to build confidence and increase their capacity to achieve. This will take hard work by teachers, administrators, families of students, and of course, the students themselves. The 'digging for diamonds' attitude is one that Steve carries into his coaching as well. Rather than simply pick a team based on what it appears to be, Steve would rather pick a team based on what it can be, keeping in mind what growth potential there is for each individual athlete (employee).
