I have worked extensively with the sequence stratigraphy and depositional environments of shales, integrating stratigraphy, petrology, clay mineralogy and paleontology into the analysis. These can complement more conventional geophysical techniques, and lead to improved exploration and development models.I revised the Paleozoic sea level chart while at Exxon Production Research, emplyoing stratigraphic and paleontologic data from around the world. Distribution of black shales (transgressions and early high stands) was one of the key criteria. My graduate work was on the Middle Ordovician Glenwood Shale, the condensed section above the St Peter Sandstone. My dissertation work wason four Upper Pennsylvanian shales, two offshore black shales and two paleosols, one with an associated coal.Recently I have been combining my background in shale deposition with sequence stratigraphy to understand how to explore for organic-rich mudstones. Understanding unconventional rocks requires looking them in unconventional ways and employing unconventional methods. Clay mineralogy and paleontology are particularly helpful with mudstones, and need to be considered. Methods to find stratigraphic gaps in organic-rich mudstones are also critical. An area of interest is hydrocarbons in and associated with igneous rocks - another type of unconventional resource (which I have published on and presented at meetings). I have also worked on salt tectonics and regional studies.
