About Steve Server, Md, Phd
Steve Server is a psychiatry resident at UCLA Health. He graduated from Princeton University in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in History. He received his PhD from the University of Chicago in History and the Conceptual and Historical Studies of Science in 2022, and his MD from the Pritzker School of Medicine, University of Chicago in 2023. His research interests include medicine and public health in modern Latin America; the history, theory, and practice of psychiatry; medical ethics and the medical humanities; medical education; and medical epistemology. His dissertation, titled "A Test of Conscience: Navigating Mexico's Servicio Médico-Social (1935-1940)" explores the emotional dimensions of medical students' professional development while on rural service.

During my training, I have endeavored to link my enthusiasm for social science with my passion for clinical care. My dissertation, completed in June 2022, focuses on the emotional dimensions of professional identity formation in a rural service medical education program established 1930s Mexico. I have significant teaching experience, both as a peer educator of medical school courses, but also as the instructor of record for undergraduate social science courses. I have also extensive leadership experience, most recently as a medical school fourth year Chief, which has permitted me to liaise with administration and cultivate skills necessary for a career in medical education. In the past eight years, I have developed skills that will permit me to offer humanistic clinical care to my patients, and thoughtful, progressive medical education to students at all levels of training.
