I have an Electronic Technician (ET) and a Rig Electrician working for and reporting directly to me and I am responsible for ensuring that their work is carried out to a specific and high standard expected from myself and Transocean.I am responsible for all Electrical Energy Isolations as well as any Permit to Works for my areas, ensure all work carried out aboard the vessel is conducted in a safe and positive manner. I also participate in all health & safety aspects on the rig as well as participating in the START card process. Having served my apprenticeship and having held the Maintenance Electrician’s post I was promoted to the post of Process Technician in 1998. I held this position until the unfortunate closure of Curtis in July 2008, although I was retained for 4 weeks after the closure as the Electrical Engineer for de-commissioning and site services, such as re-distribution of electrical powers supplies. As Maintenance Electrician I was responsible for all areas of production, this included the service, maintenance and repair of all electrical systems and machinery. Domestic installations and repairs throughout the company’s offices and housing was also part of the role. Other aspects of the position included maintenance of the fire alarm systems and installation of new machinery and plant equipment.

The first year of my apprenticeship was served at Tayside Training Services in Dundee. This provided basic skills in electrical, welding, milling, turning, fitting and sheet metal work. This was followed by 6 months intensive electrical training.
