Steven Warner, PhD, specializes in small molecule drug discovery, new screening platforms in drug discovery, and translational research focusing on cancer therapeutics. He is an expert in the discovery of novel cancer agents and has played integral roles in moving multiple compounds into clinical trials. Dr. Warner has a broad background in molecular and cell biology that comes from more than two decades of drug discovery and development in both academic and pharmaceutical industry settings. At the University of Arizona, he worked on the validation of novel drug targets for the treatment of pancreatic cancer and discovered first-in-class compounds targeting the Aurora kinases. At the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), Dr. Warner led an effort to screen genome-wide siRNA libraries and large chemical libraries in order to identify molecular targets and therapeutic agents synthetic lethal with DPC4/SMAD4 deletions in pancreatic cancer. He also worked on validating TPX2 as a therapeutic target in pancreatic cancer and identified small molecule inhibitors of this pathway. In 2007, Dr. Warner joined SuperGen Inc. where he led a team of scientists focusing on studies ranging from initial compound library screens to proof-of-concept studies in animal models. Dr. Warner worked at the Center for Investigational Therapeutics at the Huntsman Cancer Institute as Senior Manager, Drug Discovery. His work at the Huntsman Cancer Institute led to the foundational technology for Tolero Pharmaceuticals, which he co-founded in 2011. Tolero was acquired by Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma in 2017 where Dr. Warner has remained as the Head of Research.
