I went to undergraduate school at Harvard College studying physics, math and computer science. I then worked at MIT from 1966 through 1980 with a time away at Stanford University in the PhD program in computer science. While at MIT I worked on pretty much every part of the Multics operating system: kernel, scheduler, virtual memory, file system, command system, I/O system with a close interaction with several hardware components.In 1980 I went to join Stratus Computer to lead the effort to create a completely new operating system, VOS, to run there fault tolerant hardware. After the operating system (still in use 40 years later) was well on its way, I was asked to set up the support organization where we were likely the first computer company to provide "phone home" support automatically.In 1993 I founded my own company, GeoTel Communications, along with Wayne Andrews. This company developed software and hardware to route customer calls in telephone networks. This company was sold to Cisco Systems in 1999. I stayed with Cisco until 2002 when I retired.In retirement I have worked extensively within my little town of Groton, MA to bring the town's government IT efforts forward.In 2004 my family opened the first of (currently in 2020) five restaurants in the greater Boston Area.My wife, Nancy, and I have moved to Florida. Most of my Massachusetts connections have dwindled and I no longer participate in the Groton activities as before.I have been updating my programming talents by learning Swift, JavaScript, Python, Nim, and other technologies more relevant to the 2020's.
