Steve has had a lifelong fascination and appreciation for science. He initially turned his love of weather into an academic background in meteorology by starting his professional career in television. This was followed by an intentional career shift to the insurance industry in 2007. He is currently Chief Science Officer at Gallagher Re.The evolving nature of science and the integration of new research into the private sector brings continuous evolution to his day-to-day work. Key themes of his work include natural catastrophe risk, climate change, ESG, exposure management, socioeconomics, and quantifying / qualifying risk. He strives to implement data analytics and advisory to help clearly communicate risk, trends, and broader market challenges facing the insurance industry and beyond.Additional priorities include providing expertise to new strategies focused on combating the complexities of physical and non-physical risk posed by climate change. This complements further focus on critical issues within the ESG space and helping clients transition their portfolios meet the demands of a net-zero carbon emission world. He also leads post-event damage surveys to help identify ways to better mitigate risk ahead of future events. He frequently collaborates with governmental agencies, academia, and industry groups, and has co-authored many published peer-reviewed journals. He has been invited on multiple occasions to speak at the White House and further asked to participate in administration initiatives that seek to identify ways to ensure better awareness, preparedness, and investment strategies with climate risk. His work has been cited in U.S. Congressional Committee Reports and by the United Nations.Select professional speaking highlights include events for the White House; various branches of NOAA; the United Nations; National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR); National Safety Council (NSC); Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington D.C.; international industry conferences; and appeared as a featured guest for programs on the BBC, The Weather Channel, PBS, and other multimedia outlets.Steve earned his Master of Science in Business Analytics degree from the University of Notre Dame, and his Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology from Florida State University. He is a member of the American Meteorological Society (AMS), the National Weather Association (NWA), and Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS). He serves on the Mission Committee of the Illinois Red Cross, and also sits on multiple committees at the Society of Actuaries as a non-actuarial representative.
