In 2011 I was approached by Expal to set up a US division of the company. I formed the company and built a team that won a $156m IDIQ contract for the supply of demilitarization services to the US DoD. Along the way we won various contracts including a development contract for new explosives for ARDEC (The U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center); contracts for the US Navy and contracts with other major defense contractors.

As President I was required to implement complex corporate procedures and demanding reporting practices to change the company from a small entrepreneurial entity into part of a large corporate structure. I enabled the Board to fulfil its governance function by establishing company policies, operational procedures and standards. My other responsibilities were:•To manage the Marshall site and NSA contracts.•To oversee the attainment of ISO 14000 and OHSAS 18000 certifications.•Enforce procedures for ensuring compliance with ITAR, FCPA.•To provide expert opinion and support in accident investigations at other facilities

As President I was involved in all aspects of starting the ADG US subsidiary from developing the greenfield site to implementation of all management systems. My principal achievements were:• The design of buildings and supervision of construction for the 10 buildings that make up the Marshall site.• Creation of a highly effective management team from scratch. • Development of a site safety plan according to the requirements of DoD 4145.26M. • Attainment of ISO 9001:2000 certification

(Belgian subsidiary of Allied Defense Group USA As the Directeur Technique, I was legally responsible for the safety of the factory and was endorsed as a competent authority by the Belgian Ministry of Economic Affairs. My principal achievements were: • Implementation of electronic site security system including perimeter and access control. • Design of waste water treatment facility for contaminated water. • Successful transfer for pyrotechnic manufacturing operations from Holland to the Mecar Site in Belgium.

My work was principally the negotiation of contracts relating to projects in the upgrading of military vehicles and the development of the Engineering department. My responsibilities included the following: • Negotiation with Middle Eastern Ministry of Defence for the technology transfer for a lightweight turret system.• Organisation of demonstrations of a tank simulator for the Indonesian Government use and subsequent training programme.• Organisation setting up and manning of the Sabiex stand at the Eurosatory international defence exhibition • Contract negotiation for the sale of various x-ray equipment including an installation of a real time radioscopy unit to Mexican Army.• Setting up a Joint venture with AVIMO UK to integrate a mini laser rangefinder and night vision system in a lightweight reconnaissance vehicle.

I managed a multi-disciplinary team for the design and manufacture of various types of ammunition, from drawing board to shipment. I was instrumental in the inception of MECAR’s largest capital investment to date, a state of the art casting plant. My responsibilities included the following: • Design, solid modelling and stress analysis using finite element methods.• Direction of prototype manufacture and drawing package generation.• Specification of test equipment, test management and data analysis.• Generation of specifications for purchased parts, and final product performance.• Development of process control procedures as required by ISO 9001.• Design of tooling for quality control and assembly of electronic fuze components.• Cost analysis of manufacturing and raw materials enabling potential savings to be targeted and then realised.

I represented British Aerospace for all local operations involved in the planning, construction and commissioning of a new factory in Chile (total project value $30 million US dollars). My key achievements : • Planned plant layout for green field site for 13 buildings, including services, roads & safety zoning.• Supervised construction of buildings and plant infrastructure.• Led team which installed $8 million US worth of equipment to tight project schedule.• Commissioned the facility and streamlined plant operations during initial production runs. • Supervised composite propellant manufacture for the trials program.• Managed an environmental test program including temperature cycling, vibration testing and high temperature ageing.• Planned logistics of dynamic firing trials in Atacama Desert.• Liaison between UK company directors and key Chilean Government officials (Spanish/English).

Working under the mentorship of the world renowned aerodynamicist Dr. Gerald Bull I was rapidly integrated into the young project engineering team at SRC. After operating a rocket propellant pilot plant for some months and having streamlined processes in preparation for scale-up, I designed and commissioned a small composite propellant production facility for the manufacture of gas generator units. This required being based on site in Bilbao, Spain for 9 months. I also prepared technology transfer packages and presented them to our Chinese and Spanish clients; wrote and delivered a series of lectures for Chinese engineers on plant layout, safety and operation; and managed protocol for visits of Chinese delegations to Spain.

As part of my MoD sponsorship I worked at ROF Bridgwater for 1 year as a Student Engineer in 1981 before starting my University degree and then each summer until leaving in 1985.
