Director Of Sustainable Design
Charlottesville, Virginia Area
As Director of Sustainable Design at VMDO Architects, I help define sustainable design goals and new initiatives for the 80-person firm and for each of the firm’s projects. I ensure that our work, and that of our consulting partners, meets these rigorous expectations. I oversee the application of the LEED framework and the collection and processing of energy and water usage for each of our buildings. I frequently assist our project teams with low-energy design strategies and building envelope detailing. Internally, I also oversee green operational protocols and integrate our sustainable design thought leadership into firm-wide marketing and business development strategies. I regularly speak on green building topics and am recognized for advancing sustainable design knowledge in the building industry and the green schools community. My recent design research has focused on defining and integrating design strategies that inspire healthful outcomes—including behavioral shifts toward healthy eating and increased physical activity. During my tenure as Director of Sustainable Design, VMDO Architects has designed nationally- acclaimed green schools and garnered widespread attention for the application of building-as-a-teaching-tool concepts that utilize the built environment to support learning and engagement with the natural world. As a Project Architect with 20 years experience, I have designed facilities for individuals, public institutions, public and private school systems, higher education institutions, and collegiate athletic departments.
