After graduating from the Cornell Law School, I went to work for two Manhattan trial lawyers. Soon I was handling night court arraignments, trying cases, and arguing appeals. Then, I went out on my own. My first office was a $100/month windowless closet in 401 Broadway. Within a year, I moved to 230 Park Avenue and started building a sui generis practice in earnest; I had ink scrapings from the "Oath of a Freeman" tested by cyclotron at UCLA Davis, authenticating the first printing made in America; spent a year trying a case in Surrogate's Court; brought the litigation that established parents' right to equal job treatment. I took cases for their public policy aspects, won two cases in the US Court of Appeals, and "made a difference." I never lost a case, I just ran out of appeals. My practice grew as I gained experience and wisdom and after a time my clients included British Airways, Leona Helmsley and Bob McCann. My general trial practice evolved into an employment law and executive compensation practice. In 2004, I joined McCarter & English, led the Employment Law practice in New York and became Managing Partner of the New York City office. In 2008, I left for Katten,where I was on the Board of Directors and Chairman of Executive Employment. I earned a national reputation advising decision makers, primarily in financial services, on matters of compensation and employment law, and, when necessary, litigating controversies concerning pay or employment. I negotiated more than $6 billion in pay for my individual clients. In 2013, I accepted partnership in the historic firm of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, LLP as Chairman of the Executive Compensation and Benefits practice. In September 2016, I became a partner in the international law firm, McDermott, Will & Emery LLP as NY Chairman of our market-leading Compensation, Benefits and Employment Law practice group. After 6 years, I have started a new position as Partner at Harris St. Laurent & Wechsler , a leading boutique law firm, concentrating in Executive Compensation and Employment Law.
