Principal Engineer / Device Innovation Sme

Current

Greater Chicago Area

SME in the Advanced Innovation and Architecture Team, responsible for helping to create the blueprints for the next generation of mobile computing devices.● Product Architect of Adaptive Display proof of concept.Exploring new possibilities in form factors enabled by flexible display technologies, we created the Adaptive Display, which can be bent into an endless array of shapes, or even wrapped around your wrist for a hands-free experience. Key to enabling this form factor was the development of an entirely new bendable spine mechanism, which allows the device to bend and hold whatever shape the user desires.● Product Architect for razr (2020), the world's first foldable display clamshell smartphoneFor razr (2020) we completely redefined how to engineer a smartphone by creating the world's first clamshell form factor smartphone with a foldable display. The proprietary zero-gap hinge is entirely unique and allowed us to achieve razr's distinctive ID. A perfect blend of bleeding edge technology and genuinely iconic design. The new razr is what the original RAZR V3 was always destined to be!

Oct 2016 - Present

Distinguished Member Of The Technical Staff / Product Architect, Wearables

Greater Chicago Area

Responsible for defining overall product architectures for Motorola's wearable devices.● Product Architect for Moto 360, the world's first round Android Wear smartwatch (first and second generations)."What if we could make a display like this?", was the question we arrived at after months of iterations on design concepts trying to make a watch with a square display look less square. If we could figure out how to make a completely round display module by squeezing the display driver region into the smallest possible wedge of space at the bottom of the circle, then we could make a pure round smartwatch that actually looks like a watch. Working closely with industrial design and key members of the product engineering team, I created the overall product architecture for Moto 360, and proceeded to work directly with potential display suppliers to build the unique display which was one of the key enablers to the design.● Product Architect for MOTOACTV, a modular wearable GPS fitness tracker and smart music player combined.Beyond helping to develop the overall architecture for MOTOACTV and related accessories, I involved myself deeply in all aspects of this program. Taking advantage of my past experience in endurance sports, I helped advise on features and UX design for both device and portal, advised on grassroots marketing efforts to get the product into the hands of target market influencers, and was the go-to product beta tester for running performance metrics.● Architected several other wearables in the MOTOACTV franchise, and alternate versions of smartwatches leading toward Moto 360, which never made it to market, but which served to inform the best path forward in the wearables space.--

Jun 2009 - Oct 2016

Distinguished Member Of The Technical Staff / Product Architect, Consumer Experience Design

Greater Chicago Area

Responsible for defining overall product architectures and key technology enablers for Motorola cellular phones.● Defined the construction of the iconic RAZR V3 metal keypad, which was patented and was later awarded the Motorola Company-wide Patent of the Year.● Product Architect of the Motorola SLVR family of phones (Models L2, L6 and L7), translating key architecture enablers from the RAZR V3 to a family of thin, sylish candybar form factor phones. Worked closely with product design team in Singapore to transition the product architecture concepts to production designs.● Product Architect of the Motorola MOTOFONE F3, an ultra-low cost handset for emerging markets. MOTOFONE was the first cellular phone to use an electrophoretic (E-Ink) display, which was one of the key enablers for its thin, durable, light weight, energy efficient design. Worked closely with product design team in China to transition the architecture to the final production design.● Product Architect of the Motorola ROKR EM325, a low cost, yet sleek and stylish slider phone targeted for emerging markets.

May 2002 - Jun 2009

Engineering Section Manager / Principal Staff Engineer

Greater Chicago Area

Lead Product Architect for the Motorola V60 and V60i cellular phones.● V60 was the world's first all-metal exterior phone, and was Motorola's flagship phone of 2002, making appearances in numerous TV shows and movies. V60 successfully shared a common mechanical design for GSM, CDMA and TDMA variants.● In the V60i refresh, I redesigned the flip exterior to enable end-user customization of the exterior metal and lens.

Nov 1998 - May 2002

Lead Mechanical Engineer

Greater Chicago Area

Lead Engineer responsible for the design of the Motorola 311M PHS phone.● The 311M was the world's first clamshell phone with the display in the flip. At the time of launch it was the smallest and lightest phone in the world. It was also the first clamshell phone to route a flex circuit through one of the hinge knuckles, which was patented and later awarded the Motorola Mobile Devices Business Patent of the Year. This hinge and flex routing design effectively served as the industry archetype for nearly every clamshell phone design to follow.
