Over nearly two decades of work in Information Technology I've developed a wholistic approach to information security and systems management. This means viewing the tech I am responsible for as part of a larger connected whole. Understanding not only how a system functions, but who uses it, what they are doing with it, specific performance needs, security requirements, etc. is essential to the proper design, construction, maintenance and security of systems. In my work I strive to ensure the systems I work on don’t just operate securely, but truly meet the needs of the people I support. Too much security and productivity suffers, too little and the risks become too high. Balance is key. Intelligent controls, when properly placed, can go a very long way with minimal disruption. My core technical competencies are information security and systems administration. I have particular strength in IDPS, host hardening, policy framework development, internal penetration testing, scripting and automation (especially with PowerShell), proactive monitoring and alerting, and wholistic performance tuning. In addition to my professional work in tech, I am also a longtime volunteer firefighter and technical search and rescue specialist. Beyond being a great way to give back to the community, my experience in the fire service has taught me new ways to view and solve problems quickly and collaboratively. It also helped me learn how to keep a cool head and remain focused under some the most extreme pressure a person can experience. Some of my hobbies include biking, kayaking, rock climbing, and photography. I'm also an offensive security enthusiast and participate in hacking activities on hackthebox, overthewire, etc. Beyond that I also tinker with PLC's like Arduino and Raspberry Pi.
