Mayor
Served as the 21st Mayor of Evanston, IL (pop, 75,000 ~$320M Budget), one of the most socioeconomically and racially diverse urban ring cities in America and home to Northwestern University. Led the City through historic, generational challenges including a global pandemic (COVID-19), social unrest, racial inequity and injustice, and a growing climate crisis. Despite the turbulent times, Evanston led the State with one of the lowest infection and fatality rates and one of the highest vaccination rates; passed the nation’s first local reparations initiative using cannabis tax revenue ($10M), committed to 100% renewable electricity for all by 2030 and net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and managed multiple, spontaneous protests peacefully and with minimal property damage or arrests. Prior to the pandemic, led a City which added 1,000 new housing units near public transit; increased tax revenues from sales, hotel, liquor and amusement taxes; added 3 new municipal water customers generating $50M over the next 40 years; outfitted all police officers with body cameras, increasing transparency and accountability; achieved a Class 1 Fire protection rating; and maintained the City’s AA bond rating. Constructed a nationally recognized $53M Robert Crown multi-functional community center and renovated the Fleetwood-Jourdain community Center; redesigned and rebuilt the downtown Fountain Square to create a vibrant, active space; and reconstructed Chicago and Sheridan Road winning multiple awards for its complete street approach. The City's Welcoming City Ordinance was strengthened, expungement of records increased to improve job opportunities and life success, the Elevate Evanston workforce development initiative, along with the Mayor’s Employer Advisory Council (MEAC), was established, and the City redirected misdemeanors from Cook County Court to the City's Administrative Adjudication Hearings through an Alternative to Arrest process.Choose not to run for re-election.
Member Of The Board
Served on the Board of Directors of First Evanston Bancorp, owner of First Bank & Trust (FB&T), a community owned and operated bank with 11 locations and almost $1B in assets. I accepted the appointment because I love the bank's customer service (it reminds me of the bank where I grew up that recognized, valued, and appreciated me even though I was just 9 years old and depositing a very small sum.) I love that it is run by top notch bankers with a head for business and a heart for the community. And, I love that the generosity of this bank is consistently demonstrated in the communities it serves. If you are looking for a loan or a better banking experience I highly recommend considering First Bank & Trust. Stepped down from the Board due to being elected Mayor of Evanston. Shortly thereafter, FB&T was acquired by Byline Bank.
Member Of The Board
Served on the Board of Directors of a leading local youth development organization that helps 1,000+ Evanston youth acquire the skills, self-confidence, and opportunity to participate fully, freely, and responsibly in the life of the community. My involvement was due to the direct result of my personal concern over the widening income gap in America that threatens the social fabric of this country. Through after school enrichment, parental engagement, mentoring, and clinical and crisis counseling YOU is helping to release the unlimited potential of its participants as well as to offer a safe, healthy, and fun after school environment for kids. Sadly this is not the environment that many kids are exposed to. My specific focus was to provide counsel to the leadership of the organization, serve as an ambassador for their good work, and help the organization raise $16M in capital funds to meet its growing program and facility needs.
Executive Committee Board Member
Evanston Inventure is a non-profit economic development organization dedicated to the long term economic health of Evanston. Membership in Inventure includes the City, Northwestern, Evanston Hospital, Downtown Evanston, the Evanston Chamber of Commerce, Mather Lifeways, First Bank & Trust of Evanston, and other major employers.
Member Of The Board, President-Elect, President, Past-President
Served as the President-Elect, President, and Past-President of the Board of Directors for the Evanston Chamber of Commerce. In this role I helped the Board identify, implement, and meet three key objectives - (1) Improving the financial condition of the organization, (2) increasing membership, and (3) making members more the face of the Chamber. Although I am no longer a board member or elected officer of the Chamber I remain committed to helping develop a business community that is welcoming, inclusive, supportive, engaged, and compassionate. If you're thinking of starting a business in Evanston or interested in getting more involved in the Evanston business community and think I can be of assistance please feel free to contact me.
Principal Consultant
Served as a management consultant on a variety of public sector projects for federal, state, and local agencies. Worked centered on project management, financial and policy analysis, business process re-engineering, performance audits, strategic planning, and workload analysis. Instrumental in helping IBM, PwC, and Fluor compete and win several 5-year, $100M contracts. Served as the primary financial consultant to FEMA's Response & Recovery Directorate.
