I have a very personal motivation to excel in this field.I grew up in a small northeastern community that would look—at first glance—like any American residential neighborhood. But below that neighborhood was a massive underground plume of trichloroethylene (TCE, an industrial cleaning solvent). For about a century, factories nationwide commonly drained TCE into storage pits or insecure underground storage tanks…where it gradually seeped into underground aquifers. It’s now a known carcinogen. More than a half-dozen of my neighbors died from cancer, now linked to the TCE-contaminated well water below our homes. Thankfully, my own family drank bottled water and was not exposed. I went to Geneseo State University and the University of Florida, earning both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Environmental Studies. Moving to Florida, I learned that nearly our entire state relies on groundwater for drinking-water supplies. I also discovered that we have our own widespread threats to groundwater down here, including arsenic and petroleum. Since 1991, I’ve been equipped to help diagnose, monitor, and remedy properties that have been compromised by generations of chemical use or leaking underground fuel tanks. Being able to rehabilitate contaminated property (or preventing it altogether) drives me daily to get my job done right…and makes me feel that I’m fulfilling the call that got me into this business in the first place.
