I work for specialist environmental health solution providers (Diversey Sealed Air, Clifton, HSQC, Osborne Richardson, NSF) and independently to the private and public sectors for domestic and international clients. My assignments have included:For the Shangri-La Hotel Group (The Shard in both London and Paris, through the Sealed Air consultancy)• Delivered this Chinese hotel group’s in-house food hygiene regime for these high-profile landmarks in London and Paris (now for five years). For Moxon’s (Premium Fresh Fish Monger, specifically their innovative London based range of smoked fish – salmon, cod, haddock, mackerel, kippers - from a new production facility).• Won regulatory licencing approval from the local authority for both their bespoke hot and cold smoking methods.For Kokoro (rapidly expanding Japanese-Korean fusion high street take-away caterer, with branches from Glasgow to Brighton).• Won approval for a centralised production centre processing raw fish and meat, working with the regulator on the design to remove the risk of failure. • Devised and integrated a comprehensive HACCP-based food safety management and due diligence system with auditing regime.• Facilitated Kokoro’s expansion by the success of this production site from 10 to 31 sites.• Successfully used skills and relationships to turnaround the performance of outlets swiftly.For the London Borough of Lambeth• Solved a capacity issue, including Brixton Markets, aiding Lambeth to meet its Food Standards Agency (FSA) obligations across categories A-E, delivering fast and accurate results. For the Hilton Hotel Group• Audited event catering services and food suppliers to the Group ensuring they met the company’s rigorous quality standards and mitigating potentially high-profile risks. For the Hyatt and International Hotel Group (IHG) • Examined the food safety compliance in the UK and abroad, audits which led to an overhaul of the Group’s policies and standards.

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic I was approached to provide professional food safety advice for the high profile national charitable initiative "One Million Meals", backed by David Beckham and many other prominent figures. The aim of One Million Meals was to feed one million nutritious meals and drinks to NHS doctors, nurses, paramedics and keyworkers at the frontline fighting against Covid-19 pandemic by involving students, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and local communities.

From the earliest days of my career foundations in local government food regulation, I was approached to work on a freelance basis to deliver health consultancy projects. Over time, this work grew and became the foundation of the current Steve James Environmental Health Services Ltd. Selected Achievements: • Water safety sampling and advisory services for the Dorchester Hotel.• For Burger King, undertook an environmental impact assessment for a new facility in Dagenham.• A lengthy project for British Airways which tackled noise pollution issues created by the poor construction of an engine test facility, especially designing a new sound-proof cell.• For HMP Broadmoor, assessed the exposure of noise to inmates, officers and civilian instructors using power tools in the prison’s workshops.

After launching Steve James Environmental Health Services Ltd, for two years, I worked on a part-time permanent contract for the Royal Borough of Kingston, focusing on food safety, health and safety and enforcement. My achievements included:• Successfully investigated food safety enquires from the public coming from across the entire Borough.• Advised, coached and supported start-up catering businesses to meet the highest safety standards.• Directly ensured food safety for thousands of spectators during the 2012 Olympic Games, especially on the course of the men’s and women’s cycle road races.

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is one of London’s flagship councils, achieving the highest ratings in both national and local quality and satisfaction surveys over the last decade. The Environmental Health Department is very much part of this success story. For the last year I refocused my career from noise and noise management to food safety and have updated my skills both through my work and an intensive course of study. As a Senior Environmental Health Officer my main achievements have so far been:•Successfully updating my food safety knowledge and skills, transitioning from a leadership role to one where technical skills, project delivery and relationship management are supremely important.Level 4 Managing Food Safety in Catering and Level 3 Award in Effective Auditing and Inspection Skills - Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance (Merits)•Meeting all of RBKC’s “REAL” performance management system objectives.•Using my knowledge and seniority to deal with complicated and potentially confrontational inspections and other interventions as smoothly as possible.•Tackling the threat of illegally imported food products and preparing for a big rise in demand caused by the 2012 Olympic Games.•Implementing alternative safety strategies, focusing on education and enforcement, with the staff of regularly poorly performing premises and street traders around the Earl’s Court area.•Collaborating with the Metropolitan Police on the “London Violence at Work” project, reaching out to food retailers to discuss safety issues, risk management and crime prevention techniques.•Transferring skills to younger colleagues and environmental health students working with RBKC on internships, especially teaching them non-confrontational methods of relationship management.

As a Senior Environmental Health Officer my main achievements were:• Tackling the threat of illegally imported food products and preparing for a big rise in demand caused by the 2012 Olympic Games.• Implementing alternative safety strategies, focusing on education and enforcement, with the staff of regularly poorly performing premises and street traders around the Earl’s Court area.• Collaborating with the Metropolitan Police on the “London Violence at Work” project, reaching out to food retailers to discuss safety issues, risk management and crime prevention techniques.• Using my knowledge and seniority to deal with complicated and potentially confrontational inspections and other interventions as smoothly as possible.Previously, I was the Team Manager for the Noise and Nuisance Service. Leading a team of 21 professionals providing a 24 hour service, I managed a budget of £1.8 million. In this demanding and high-profile role, my achievements included:• Improving the service’s impact on the lives of local residents, changing over-relaxed enforcement by adopting a more appropriately robust approach, increasing enforcement actions by 100%.• Forming a successful partnership with the RNID, approaching them to work with several Councils on a campaign raising young people’s awareness of the hearing loss risk from personal stereos.• Reskilling the service’s officers to work closely with the Police and Contingency Planning team, reducing demands on the council’s 24 hour emergency response team, with cost and efficiency gains.

With a population of around 320,000 people, Ealing is a large and challenging borough in the North West of London. In this management role, I led a multi-disciplinary team of 9, tackling residential, commercial, planning and licensing issues. My achievements were:•Successfully undertaking a complete review of the council’s out-of-hours noise service.•Re-designing the Council’s social housing and mental health related noise policies, resulting in an improved collaborative service.•Representing the Council’s interests at all levels of the courts system, planning inquiries and various licensing proceedings.•Managing relationships with a variety of statutory partners, commercial and voluntary sector organisations and public committees, including deputising for the Service Head.I managed 4 Senior Environmental Health officers, 3 Noise and Nuisance officers and 2 Administrative officers, including neighbour and commercial noise complaints and other noise issues such as reviewing planning applications, licensed premises applications and reviews.

•Took the lead for all noise nuisance and pollution control matters, including asbestos, national smoke and sulphur dioxide surveys, Part B process inspections.•Managed and developed two technical officers and for legal enforcement and general advisory work.•Delivered the council's out of hours noise services.Responsible for Lead free petrol campaign and other Noise Action week and joint agency working.
