Steve has been a professional scientist and technologist for 40 years, having personally written over 30 commercial software products comprising over 1,500,000 lines of code, nearly all below the API line. His commercial software works have been published by companies such as Borland International, General Software, Microsoft, NeuroSynthetica, Steve Jones Labs, Phoenix Technologies, and Wendin, Inc. NeuroSynthetica (https://www.neurosynthetica.com) is building the foundation for the next generation of Artificial Intelligence-- Synthetic Intelligence. Unlike the rule-based expert systems of the 1970s and Machine Learning programming paradigms of 2010s, Synthetic Intelligence is artificial intelligence through sentience, arising from a simulated synthetic model of the minimal brain architecture necessary and sufficient for behavior to emerge. In collaboration with our partners, we are isolating that architecture and enabling its deployment in commercial applications. Our scientific inquiry seeks to understand the conditions under which sentience arises, in natural biology as well as in simulo: (1) How does Sentience arise in brains, natural or synthetic? (2) What is the minimal brain Architecture required for sentience to arise? To make our inquiry possible, we've built simulation server technology that simulates at-scale brain models (>1bn neurons with 1ms temporal resolution) created with graphical tools using SOMA™, a descriptive modeling language. The simulation server and model development tools run on commercially-available X64 PC and server hardware.

Steve founded Phoenix's Beyond The Core (BTC) initiative and led the company's forward-looking technology investigative team. The group identified opportunities and investigated them through research and prototyping activities leading to new Phoenix COTS products. BTC products include Diagnostics, Personalization, and SecureGuard plug-ins.In his general CTO role, Steve worked with SVs, OSVs, IHVs, ISVs, ODMs and OEMs to co-develop an aligned long-term technology strategy for sustained growth and profitability. This included core technologies as well as adjacencies such as plug-ins, technology support for business model evolution, embedded markets and support for the entire supply chain.Steve retired after 2 1/2 great years at Phoenix in Feb 2011.

Steve focused on expanding Phoenix's global market share in core systems software, providing a complete portfolio of firmware solutions for a wide variety of devices, from PCs and servers to consumer electronics, telecommunications and other embedded systems.Founded Architecture Control Board; established ACB standards, strategies and best practices for the company's global engineering team.Steve led Phoenix's SecureCore Tiano architecture definition, which followed from his six requirements for the product-- best bringup experience, best customization experience, fastest boot time, highest reliability, compatibilty with the Intel Green H, and support for forming 3rd party relationships. SCT 2.0 incorporated new methodologies, new team organization, new standards, and new approaches to problems during development. This product transformed the company from a follower to a leader in UEFI technology.Steve also led technology research and development, and also long-range research in emerging technologies (undisclosed).

Steve founded General Software, Inc. and grew it to a $20M business over 19 years, without outside debt or equity financing. Focusing solely on the embedded market, General Software engaged manufacturers of electronic devices containing embedded computers, providing them with system software solutions in a wide range of application areas. The company won numerous awards including Washington State’s Fast 50 in two consecutive years. In 2008, Steve sold the company to Phoenix Technologies Ltd.As CTO, Steve provided architectural control and established the company’s high standards and best practices for producing world-class software. He founded the training programs that built world-class technologists in the company’s development and quality control groups, establishing a high quality bar that allowed the company to serve customers with demanding requirements. Steve was a significant contributor to all of the company’s products and their external documentation.

After Dave Cutler joined Microsoft and launched the company's Portable Systems (Portasys) group, Steve joined the project, then called Portable OS/2, which later became Windows NT. Steve architected the Transport, Network, Link, and Physical device driver interfaces, which later became simply TDI (Transport Driver Interface) and NDIS.Steve studied operating system design under Microsoft's Dave Cutler-- the best and most prolific operating system architect in the world today.

Steve joined Microsoft in 1987, leading the development of LAN Manager 386 (aka "Pinball"), the company's first 32-bit network server platform. This project was developed by a small SWAT team of five entrepreneurs-- Steve Jones, Microsoft's own Chief Scientist Gordon Letwin, Manx Software's Thomas Fenwick, Steve's brother Greg Jones, and MDBS System's Mike Gaggle. The project was named "Pinball" because the pinball player plays alone-- the group consisted of five solo contributors who each took a major piece to write. Steve contributed NETBEUI, and later became Transport Development Manager, responsible for the Network Business Unit's development activities at layer 4 and below, even developing the first versions of Microsoft's NETBEUI transport protocol drivers for OS/2 and DOS, the smallest and fastest implementations in the world at that time.

Steve launched Wendin's Computer Systems Division in 1984, developing the XTC text editor, the PCVMS operating system (a VAX/VMS operating system clone that ran on IBM PC/ATs), the PCUNIX (later called PCNX) operating system (a Unix clone that ran on IBM PC/ATs), Operating System Toolbox (an operating system toolkit that enabled software developers to create their own operating systems), and Wendin-DOS (an MS-DOS clone with OS/2-like screen groups and multitasking), among other products.

When Borland International's Turbo Pascal took off, a flurry of follow-on products were offered by Borland, such as Turbo Graphix Toolbox, Turbo Editor Toolbox, and others. These "adders" were typically written by independent developers and productized and marketed by Borland.Steve wrote Turbo Editor Toolbox, adapting his own editor written for CPM86, which followed Wordstar conventions for command key sequences. He added a macro language, integer and string variables, incremental search, and other programmer-oriented features, and sold the product as XTC at Wendin, Inc. This formed the basis for the Turbo Editor Toolbox product, which incorporated an editor instantiated from the toolbox called MicroStar (written in Turbo Pascal.)Since that time, Steve has ported the editor from DOS to Windows, and again to Linux, still preferring it over the newer IDEs we have today.Steve is proud to be an Honorary Borland Barbarian by virtue of having authored one of Borland's early products and worked with one of the industry's most important pioneers, Borland's own Philippe Kahn.

While a full time student, Steve maintained system software on CDC 6400 and Cyber 750 systems used university-wide.
